Thursday's French Open tips: Novak Djokovic to continue winning at Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic will be looking to pick up where he left off as he faces another dangerous veteran at the French Open.

Djokovic shook off the rust to win his opening match fairly comfortably but his second trial will be a sterner test.

French Open 2024 Men's Singles: Alexander Zverev vs David Goffin

Alexander Zverev will test himself against David Goffin after putting an end to Rafael Nadal's dreams in the opening round.

Goffin and Zverev have evenly split six encounters down the years stretching back to their first clash in a Challenger event in 2014.

In full ATP Tour meetings, Zverev leads 3-2 and he has won their most recent meeting which came in Rome last year.

Zverev is out to secure his eighth consecutive win on clay having won the Rome Masters ahead of the French Open.

 

French Open 2024 Men's Singles: Novak Djokovic vs Roberto Carballes Baena

Roberto Carballes Baena has made two attempts to get the better of Novak Djokovic and failed both times.

Djokovic did look a little off the pace at times against Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the opening round but he still won in straight sets.

Baena spent over three hours battling past Constant Lestienne but he needs to put the stature of his opponent out of his mind.

Djokovic will be dangerous if he can generate momentum and a win here will set him up well.

 

French Open 2024 Men's Singles: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Casper Ruud

A fifth career meeting between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Casper Ruud also awaits us this afternoon.

Ruud and Fokina have each won two of their previous clashes but their only meeting on clay went the way of the Spaniard.

Fokina would love to repeat a 2021 French Open win over Ruud but faces a player in good touch.

Ruud is a former French Open finalist and will take some stopping in this contest.

 

French Open 2024 Men's Singles: Gael Monfils vs Lorenzo Musetti

Gael Monfils is enjoying what might be his final French Open run but Lorenzo Musetti can player party pooper.

Musetti is yet to beat Monfils having lost their only encounter to date which came in Vienna in 2021.

Musetti has enjoyed the better clay swing when it comes to match wins and should be the favourite in this one.

Monfils will have the crowd backing him but that only counts for so much.

 

French Open 2024 Women's Singles: Hailey Baptiste vs Jasmine Paolini

No 12 seed Jasmine Paolini has endured a rough clay swing but can get something going at the French Open.

The Italian women's No 1 faces unheralded American Hailey Baptiste in the second round.

Paolini will be out to avenge a previous loss to Baptiste in their only meeting in singles competition.

Paolini has a few things counting against her but looks to be the player who should prevail.

 

French Open 2024 Women's Singles: Peyton Stearns vs Daria Kasatkina

Daria Kasatkina will also be tasked with snuffing out an American hope in the second round.

Kasatkina is chasing her fourth win over Peyton Stearns in as many meetings.

When they met in the French Open last season, Kasatkina dropped just one game on her way to victory.

Kasatkina should be good for another straight-sets win over Stearns as they meet for a fourth time.

 

French Open 2024 Women's Singles: Victoria Azarenka vs Mirra Andreeva

Victoria Azarenka may be a former world No 1 but she is still the current world No 21 and outranks Mirra Andreeva by 17 places.

Azarenka should have a point to prove with many labelling her young Russian opponent the favourite for this clash.

This will be the first meeting between players who could both be considered WTA Tour stars.

Andreeva would establish herself as a danger in this tournament if she could win this encounter.

 

French Open 2024 Women's Singles: Madison Keys vs Mayar Sherif

Madison Keys continues the strong American challenge at the French Open when she faces Egypt's Mayar Sherif.

This is one of several first-time meetings in the Roland Garros second round.

Both players have been good on clay this season and have managed some good streaks.

Keys however has been closer to great when it comes to elite-level tournaments and she should find her way into the third round.
