Tennis acca tips: Veterans to resist the next wave ahead of the US Open

There is action in Winston-Salem, Cleveland and Chicago as the elite professional tours approach the US Open.

The main draw for the US Open will be held on Thursday this week and players in action now have no way of influencing that.

However, quite a few will be out to get some time on court and build into playing their best on the big stage.

Compatriots Ekaterina Alexandrova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich meet for the fourth time in the Tennis in the Land second round.

Alexandrova has come out on top in all three of there previous meetings and should be favoured to come out on top again.

Sasnovich has had her work cut out for her to reach this stage, battling though qualifying before upsetting home hope Emma Navarro.

Alexandrova put away Patricia Tig in the first round with minimum fuss and on form she should be able to extend her dominance to 4-0 over Sasnovich.

Clara Tauson holds a 1-0 lead over Leylah Fernadez in their head-to-head after a three-set win over the 2021 US Open finalist at the French Open earlier this season.

Fernandez has been plagued by injuries this season and hasn't been able to build any great momentum.

Tauson has bested three quality opponents to reach this stage and the time on court will serve the Dane well.

Fernandez played well in besting Linda Noskova while dropping just two games but can expect a sterner test from Tauson.

WTA Cleveland: Sara Sorribes Tormo vs Veronika Kudermetova

Veronika Kudermetova is out to kick start her US Open season after faltering in Cincinnati with a first round loss to Venus Wiliams.

Kudermetova will need to avenge a loss to Sara Sorribes Tormo suffered at the 2020 Australian Open in similar conditions.

Sorribes Tormo is 2-2 on hard courts this season while Kudermetova has been a semi-finalist at Adelaide and Doha on the surface.

Kudermetova is 2-3 at Grand Slams this season and will want to build momentum heading into the year's final Major.

Mirra Andreeva was deprived of a dream match against Venus Williams in the first round and had to be content with grinding beyond Tamara Korpatsch.

Andreeva does have a former US Open champion to contend with in her second round assignment against Sloane Stephens.

Stephens fought back from the brink to beat compatriot Lauren Davis in her first round match.

This will be the first meeting between these two players with Andreeva having just begun her professional career.

Rebecca Peterson takes on Kaia Kanepi for the second time in her career five years after the Estonian bested her at the 2018 US Open.

Peterson has played just four matches in August but she looked close to her best in a win over Diane Parry.

Kanepi is set to retire at the end of the season and is on something of a farewell tour.

She has not featured on the US Open swing yet but Kanepi was too good for Margarita Gasparyan in the first round.
