Russian youngster Mirra Andreeva beats Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia at Madrid Open
Mirra Andreeva is looking at the top of her game at the Madrid Open as she claimed a straight-sets win over Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.
Teenager Mirra Andreeva continued her fine run at the Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over number 14 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia to reach the third round.
The 15-year-old Russian wild card had defeated Canada's Leylah Fernandez in her opening match for a first main-draw WTA Tour win.
On Thursday, Andreeva became only the seventh player since 2000 to defeat a top-20 opponent before the age of 16 with a 7-6 (6) 6-3 win over Brazilian Haddad Maia.
Andreeva was runner-up in the Australian Open girls' final but has not lost a match since, winning two second-tier titles to earn her shot against the big guns.
"I'm a bit surprised but also everyone was telling me they are playing the same level as you, they are just more consistent," the teenager, who next faces 17th seed Magda Linette, told wtatennis.com.
Elsewhere, Jule Niemeier upset three-time former champion Petra Kvitova, defeating the number 10 seed 7-6 (9) 6-1.
It was a second career top-10 win for the German, who reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year and ended Kvitova's victorious run following her Miami Open triumph.
Second seed Aryna Sabalenka bounced back from her loss to Iga Swiatek in the Stuttgart final last weekend by defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-4 6-3.
Coco Gauff eased past qualifier Irene Burillo Escorihuela 6-4 6-1, while fifth seed Caroline Garcia defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-3 6-4 and home favourite Paula Badosa battled to a 6-3 4-6 6-4 win against Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
