Maria Sakkari wins in Guadalajara to complete WTA Finals line-up

Maria Sakkari in action - Oct 2022

Maria Sakkari successfully battled past Veronika Kudermetova at the Guadalajara Open to secure the last spot in the WTA Finals.

The Greek fourth seed dropped to the court in a squat and screamed with relief and delight as she claimed a 6-1 5-7 6-4 victory over the Russian following an exhausting two hours and 35 minutes in Mexico.
Sakkari saved 14 of 15 break points, including one in the final game, to progress to the season-ending tournament which begins on October 31 in Fort Worth, Texas, for the second straight year.
"Without fire you cannot win these matches, without heart, without courage, without just going for it and being brave," Sakkari said on court in a post-match interview.
"You cannot get these opportunities, you cannot win them, you cannot do things like the one today."
With Sakkari's place secured, the line-up is now complete. Here are the eight women set to do battle in Fort Worth:
  • Iga Swiatek (POL)
  • Ons Jabeur (TUN)
  • Jessica Pegula (USA)
  • Coco Gauff (USA)
  • Aryna Sabalenka (BLR)
  • Caroline Garcia (FRA)
  • Daria Kasatkina (RUS)
  • Maria Sakkari (GRE)
Steve Simon, WTA Chairman & CEO said: "The 2022 WTA Finals is set to be one of our most exciting year-end finales to date and we are thrilled for the Finals to return to the US for the first time since 2005.
