French Open 2023 tips: Women's singles day 11 guide and suggested bets

Tunisia's Ons Jabeur

It is the second quarter-final day at Roland Garros, where we have two contrasting matches as Ons Jabeur faces Beatriz Haddad Maia and Iga Swiatek takes on Coco Gauff in a repeat of last year's final.

Some contrasting quarter-finals occur on Wednesday, where one match is expected to be eagerly contested while the other might be a one-sided affair.

Day 11 guide - Women's matches

Times subject to change

Ons Jabeur (7) vs Beatriz Haddad Maia (14) Wednesday, 7 June, Time: 10am

A tricky encounter to call gets us going when dark horse Jabeur take on Haddad Maia on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Jabeur began her campaign at the clay-court Major with a solid 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lucia Bronzetti, followed by a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win against Oceane Dodin.

In the third round, Jabeur faced a tough challenge from Olga Danilovic but managed to stage a comeback after dropping the first set, ultimately winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to secure her place in the fourth round.

In her most recent match against Bernarda Pera, Jabeur displayed her power and finesse, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph. This marks the first time in her career that she has reached the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Meanwhile, Haddad Maia commenced her journey with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tatjana Maria.

She then faced Diana Shnaider in the second round, prevailing in a hard-fought battle with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

The Brazilian continued her impressive run by overcoming Ekaterina Alexandrova in a comeback victory, winning 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, and securing a fourth-round clash with Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Haddad Maia once again found herself a set down but demonstrated resilience, ultimately triumphing with a score of 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-5, and reaching her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final.

Jabeur holds a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head encounters on the WTA Tour.

They previously faced each other in April's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix quarter-finals in Stuttgart, where Jabeur emerged victorious with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win.

While Jabeur enters the match as the favourite, Haddad Maia should not be underestimated, particularly considering her strong performance on clay courts.

Jabeur has showcased a formidable first serve throughout the tournament, recording 14 aces and winning approximately 71 percent of her points (93 out of 131).

However, her second serve has been less reliable, with 20 unforced errors at Roland Garros. Jabeur must exercise caution to avoid serving too many vulnerable second serves.

Jabeur has hit 98 winners thus far, but her unforced error count is 86 and will need to maintain control and minimize errors if she is to go deep in the tournament. The Tunisian's aggressive playing style and varied shots, however, are potent weapons.

On the other hand, Haddad Maia will aim to apply early pressure on Jabeur and maintain her intensity throughout the match.

Although her serve has not yielded many aces in Paris, returning it has proven challenging for her opponents.

Haddad Maia did serve six double faults in her previous match and must exercise caution, particularly on her second serve when facing Jabeur.

Haddad Maia has recorded 131 winners at the French Open, but her unforced error count of 156 is slightly higher than twice that of Jabeur's.

The Brazilian's on-court movement, stamina, and net game will be crucial factors and must be at their best.

Ultimately, the player who maintains composure under pressure will likely emerge victorious.

At this stage, Jabeur seems to possess a slight advantage, considering Haddad Maia's demanding fourth-round match against Sorribes Tormo.

Suggested bets

Jabeur-Haddad Maia to be one-sided
Jabeur to win opening set 6-3
Haddad Maia to win second set 6-3

Set score prediction: Jabeur to win in three sets

Iga Swiatek (1) vs Coco Gauff (6) Wednesday, 7 June, Time: 10am

Swiatek and Gauff are set to face each other again, following their meeting in the final at Roland Garros last year.
The question remains: Will Swiatek triumph over Gauff again, or will Gauff secure a spot in the semi-finals by defeating Swiatek?

Swiatek's quest for a third French Open title remains on course, as her opponent Lesia Tsurenko retired from their fourth-round match after just six games.

Swiatek had established a commanding 5-1 lead in the first set when Tsurenko decided to withdraw from the contest. Prior to her retirement, Tsurenko sought medical assistance while trailing 1-4 in the opening set.

After being broken at love in the subsequent game, Tsurenko recognised that she could no longer continue against Swiatek.

With this victory, Swiatek secured her place in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the fourth consecutive year. With six wins in the previous encounters against Gauff, Swiatek will undoubtedly feel confident against the sixth-seeded American.

Their most recent meeting occurred in the semi-finals of this year's Dubai Championships, with Swiatek prevailing 6-4, 6-2.

Gauff's path to the quarter-finals was marked by a resounding 7-5, 6-2 victory over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. The 19-year-old performed excellently, completing the straight-sets win in one hour and 31 minutes.

This significant triumph propels Gauff to her fourth Grand Slam quarter-final in her young career.

However, Gauff faces a formidable challenge in the next round as she takes on three-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek.

In fact, Gauff has yet to win a set against Swiatek in their six previous encounters.

To achieve a major upset against Swiatek, Gauff will need to minimise her mistakes. In her fourth-round victory against Schmiedlova, Gauff committed 22 unforced errors, which will not suffice against the consistent Swiatek.

Swiatek is currently riding an 11-match winning streak at Roland Garros, adding to the difficulty of the task ahead for Gauff.

Suggested bets

Gauff to win more than 6.5 games
No tie-breaks in Swiatek-Gauff
Fewer than 2.5 sets played

Set score prediction: Swiatek to win in straight sets
