By the Numbers: Novak Djokovic's terrific 24 grand slams

The indomitable Novak Djokovic is reaching heights never before achieved in the tennis world.

In this special edition of By the Numbers, usopen.org gives you 24 stats to commemorate Novak Djokovic crowning achievement in Queens.

1: Djokovic won his first major title at the 2008 Australian Open, defeating France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(2).

2: Championship points saved by Djokovic against Roger Federer in the 2019 Wimbledon final. Djokovic’s 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 13-12 (3), marked the first time that a man had saved championship points and gone on to win a Wimbledon final since 1949.

3: Djokovic has won each of the four Grand Slams at least three times. He holds 10 Australian Open titles, three French Open titles, seven Wimbledon titles and four US Open titles.

4: Number of US Open titles won by the 36-year-old juggernaut. He moves into a tie with John McEnroe for fourth all-time. Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer all have five US Open titles. 

Four is also the number of Grand Slam titles that Djokovic has won beyond the age of 35 – also a record. 

5: Five of Djokovic’s 24 victories in Grand Slam finals have come in five sets. He owns a 5-2 record in five-setters in Grand Slam finals and 38-11 overall. 

Five is also the number of winning streaks of 20 or more that Djokovic has reeled off during his Grand Slam career.

6: Djokovic has reached at least the semifinals of all four Slams in a single season six times – 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2021 and 2023. 

7: Number of Djokovic’s Wimbledon titles. The Serb is one behind Federer for the all-time lead in men’s singles titles at SW19. 

Seven is also the number of times that Djokovic has won multiple majors in a single season. 

8: Number of wins against Federer and Nadal (combined) in Grand Slam finals. Djokovic has four wins over Federer in major finals, and four wins over Nadal in major finals. 

Eight is also the number of times that Djokovic has won a title when losing the opening set (8-8). 

9: Number of Wimbledon finals (7-2) that Djokovic has reached. He has reached seven at Roland Garros (3-4), 10 at the Australian Open (10-0) and 10 at the US Open (4-6) to bring his record number of Grand Slam final appearances to 36 – more than any other player, male or female.

10: Number of Australian Open men’s singles titles that Djokovic has won. 

11: Number of times Djokovic defeated Federer at the Grand Slams (11-6). 

12: Number of Grand Slam titles Djokovic has won since turning 30 – most of any player – male or female. 

13: Djokovic has won major titles in 13 different seasons: 2008, 2011-2016, 2018-2023

14: Number of major titles Djokovic has won on hard courts. The Belgrade native has won 10 on the Plexicushion in Australia, and another four on the US Open’s Laykold Courts. No other player – male or female – has won as many hard court Slams.

15: Years between his first (2008) and most recent Grand Slam title. 

Fifteen is also the number of consecutive tiebreaks that Djokovic won this year, from the third round at the Australian Open to the final at Wimbledon. It’s the longest run of tiebreaks won at the Slams in a single season in history. 

16: Djokovic has won 16 of his last 20 major finals, bringing his overall record to 24-12. 

17: Djokovic’s 17th title was his first of the 2020s. The Grand Slam legend has won major titles in three decades: One in the 2000s, 15 in the 2010s and eight so far this decade. 

18: Number of Top 5 wins Djokovic has recorded in major finals. He has recorded eight of them against Top-2-ranked opponents. 

18 is also the number of wins that Djokovic has notched against Federer and Nadal combined at the majors.

19: Djokovic came back from two sets down in the Roland-Garros final in 2021 against Stefanos Tsitsipas to win his 19th career major title. The Serbian is one of seven players to have rallied from two sets down to win a major final. 

In total, Djokovic has come back from two sets down to win a match at a major eight times, and he has gone on to win that major on five of those eight occasions. Two of those triumphs were at the US Open - rallying from two sets down against Federer in the 2011 semifinals and this year in the third round against Laslo Djere.

20: Djokovic’s age when he won his first major title, at the 2008 Australian Open. 

21: Number of times that Djokovic has faced his Big Three brethren – Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray in Grand Slam finals. Djokovic won 13 of the 21, including eight of the last nine. 

22: Number of Djokovic’s Grand Slam titles that have been accomplished by defeating a Top 10 player in the final. 

23: When Djokovic won his 23rd Slam title at the French Open this year, it marked the first time he ever stood alone atop the men’s singles Grand Slam titles list, as he passed his longtime rival Rafael Nadal. 

24: Number of Grand Slams won by Novak Djokovic. The Serbian legend is tied atop the all-time Grand Slam singles titles list with Margaret Court. He is the clear leader among the men, as he stretches his lead over Nadal (22) to two majors.
