ATP Tour news: Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Cameron Norrie knocked out in Paris

Making his first tournament appearence since returning from injury and the birth of his first child, Nadal fell to a surprise 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 to America's Tommy Paul, who quickly hailed the victory as the greatest of his career.

"It's probably my best win," said the 25-year-old.

"I was obviously pumped for the matchup because it's always interesting when you play one of the Big Three.

"I've only played him the second time, but the first time I was so nervous. It was weird, this time I wasn't really nervous. I was pretty relaxed going onto the court and the day before. I think that played a role.

"I came out playing pretty well. He got the first set, but I feel like I played pretty well from the jump.

"I thought when I was making my first serve, I was playing well.

"I had a lot of fun out there. It was probably the best I've played in the past three months. I know it's been a slow Europe swing for me, so I'm pumped to get that W."

Most concerning for Nadal will be how one-sided the final set was, with Paul claiming three breaks of serve to wrap up the contest in quick time.

Meanwhile, Australian Alex de Minaur was also celebrating his first victory over a top-five player after defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in two hours and 46 minutes.

After splitting the first two sets, Medvedev went a break up in the third only for De Minaur to come roaring back and take the win.

"De Minaur played very well. He didn't miss much. He did the right choice many times. I had my chances, didn't use them. So credit to him," Medvedev said after the match.

He added: "I was not at all talking to the umpire about the crowd. In my opinion, the crowd was nice, supporting both players, 50/50, always nice. In my opinion, the umpire didn't do a good match, but I'm not criticising.

"It's like, he did a bad match like I can do a bad match, for example. At the end my attitude was not good enough. I can admit it. But in my opinion, he didn't make a good match. I like [chair umpire] Nacho [Forcadell], and I like him as an umpire. I'm talking only about today."

De Minaur moves on to face Frances Tiafoe next after the 16th seeded American beat Jack Draper 6-3, 7-5.

Tiafoe advanced after knocking out British No 1 Cameron Norrie.

In a match that did not get underway until after midnight, the 13th-ranked Brit never looked comfortable against his 64th-ranked opponent, falling 6-3 5-7 7-6 (3) in almost three hours on court.

Norrie proved to be his own worst enemy, giving up 27 unforced errors and four double faults while only managing to hit 34 winners, compared to 50 from Moutet.

It came after Norrie's compatriots Dan Evans and Jack Draper also suffered second-round exits.

Meanwhile, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andrey Rublev completed the singles field for the 2022 Nitto ATP Finals which is due to be played next week.

The pair will join Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev in the season finale.
