Late Patson Daka header keeps Zambia alive at AFCON
Zambia were held to a 1-1 draw with Tanzania in their Africa Cup of Nations Group F match on Sunday evening.
Chipolopolo kicked off their AFCON campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with DR Congo but were expecting a result from a Tanzanian side without a head coach and who lost their opening clash 3-0 to Morocco.
Taifa Stars suspended Adel Amrouche after he was given an eight-match ban and fined $10,000 by the Confederation of African Football for comments suggesting 'Morocco had influence over CAF'.
But his side were full value for their point and will be disappointed to not have won the game, having opened the scoring on 11 minutes through Simon Msuva and playing the entire half a man up after Roderick Kabwe saw red on 44 minutes.
But Patson Daka popped up when most needed to find an 88th minute equaliser at Stade de San Pedro.
Kabwe had a night to forget as he gifted Tanzania the ball for their early opener.
Zambia's fight-back came thick and fast but without any bite, as Lameck Banda put in a tasty cross that was missed by both Daka and the onrushing Fashion Sakala.
Kabwe was booked initially for a foul on Msuva after 32 minutes and then saw red as the first half drew to a close - but only after a first shot on target for Zambia as Banda fired in, but straight at Tanzania stopper Aishi Manula.
Daka should have teed up Sakala at the start of the second period but he ended up going himself and failing to test Manula.
But the momentum was always with Zambia, and despite struggling to find a goal early enough to have time to win the game, it was a welcome sight when Daka headed home a Clatous Chama corner in the final minutes.
The result left Zambia in third place in Group F with two points. They are one clear of fourth-placed Tanzania, level with DR Congo in third and two adrift of leaders Morocco.
