    Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom

Paul Heckingbottom returned Sheffield United to the Premier League, but his time in management career has been a bit of a rollercoaster and he is now at Preston.

Heckingbottom is a former professional football player turned manager. He has held a number of managerial positions since retiring from playing in 2012.

He represented a total of 11 clubs as a player and was part of the Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley sides that won the League One play-offs.

As a manager, he has so far taken charge of four sides - Barnsley, Leeds, Hibernian and Sheffield United - three of which are based in Yorkshire.

At Barnsley, he guided the Tykes to the League One play-offs and the Football League trophy in the 2015/16 season.

Heckingbottom's teams play a fluid brand of football that is very attack focused. This saw Sheffield United become the third-highest scorers after Burnley and Middlesbrough in their promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season.

But after a terrible start to the 2023/24 season, which saw Sheffield United experience an 8-0 home thrashing by Newcastle and 5-0 defeats to Arsenal and Burnley, Heckingbottom was sacked on December 5.

Heckingbottom took the manager's hot seat at Preston on August 20, 2024, replacing Ryan Lowe who had departed the club a week earlier by mutual consent.
