Who will Newcastle United sign in the summer transfer window? - Five big name Magpies targets for Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe

With PSR problems now behind Newcastle, focus turns towards who they will sign as they look to build a squad that's ready to compete for European football.

The last season was a mixed bag on Tyneside, with the joys of smashing Kylian Mbappe and co 4-1 in the Champions League mixed with the lows that a seamingly endless injury list brought.

Now the job for Howe and new sporting director Paul Mitchell is to add depth to the squad after a series of injuries exposed some frailties in the Toon squad.

Howe has already strengthened the goalkeeeping department with the arrivals of Greek international Odysseas Vlachodimos and veteran John Ruddy. He's also added to his back line with free agent Lloyd Kelly and has made Lewis Hall's loan spell permanent.

With big money sales already made, it's now heavily rumoured that the heirarchy are looking to spend big on three positions: Centre-half, right-winger and a forward.

Planet Sport has a list of five players who the Toon could target as they look to add depth to their squad.

Fikayo Tomori

Fikayo Tomori

There has been a heavy emphasis on recruiting English talent since Howe's arrival and the signing of Fikayo Tomori would fit the template.

The AC Milan defender has impressed in Serie A, but could his desire to reclaim his spot in the England squad lure him to the North East.

With Fabian Schar at the wrong side of his 30's and Jamaal Lascelles out with a long term knee problem, the 26-year-old could be a good acquisition.

Malick Thiaw

Thiaw, another centre-half from AC Milan, is someone who the Newcastle board are reportedly interested in.

The 22-year-old has made 54 appearances for the Italian giants since arriving from Schalke in 2022 and helped his side reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2023.

Thiaw has three caps for the German national team and given his age he could be seen as a long term replacement for Schar. Out of the two AC Milan stars, Thiaw seems more likely to make the move to the North East.

Bryan Mbeumo

Mbeumo has been one of the standout performers in Brentford's side since they arrived in the Premier League three years ago.

He helped keep them afloat during Ivan Toney's suspension and it's a surprise that nobody has come in for the dangerous right-winger

With 43 goal contributions in 98 appearances, he's a proven performer at this level and with a lack of creative output from Miguel Almiron last season, Mbeumo could fit the bill and add balance to the Newcastle front three.

Noni Madueke

Madueke's name may not be on Newcastle fans' wish lists but even though he has had a baptism of fire at Chelsea, we can see why his name is being touted with a move to St. James' Park.

The winger has shown potential in West London, but Howe has helped develop players like that in the past, most notably Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento.

The young winger once again fits the age profile that the Toon have adopted and while a move for the him could be a risk, it may be one that could pay off in the long haul.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Toon fans may be thinking that they are well stocked up front with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, however there were large chunks of the season where one of the pair was injured and as a result was putting pressure on the other to play every game.

While Calvert-Lewin is hardly a box office name, he would do a job as a back-up striker on Tyneside and has Premier League experience to boot.

There were rumours a deal was close earlier in the window, but it fell through nevertheless don't be surprised if the Toon go back in for the Everton man, especially if Wilson departs.
