Report: Man City striker Julian Alvarez linked with move to Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez

Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez is reportedly in talks over a potential move to Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.

This news, initially reported by Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo on X (formerly Twitter), highlights that negotiations have begun, though it's unknown whether these discussions are between Alvarez and Atleti or involve both clubs.

Julian Alvarez has been a key player for Manchester City since his arrival 18 months ago. He had an impressive first season, winning the Treble with City and the World Cup with Argentina.

Despite his success, Alvarez has reportedly been seeking more game time, an issue that has come to the fore as Phil Foden emerged as a star at No. 10, reducing Alvarez's role even as he made more appearances last season than in his debut campaign.

Atletico Madrid's interest in Alvarez comes at a crucial time as the club's forward Alvaro Morata is set to join Milan.

This move follows Milan's unsuccessful attempt to secure Joshua Zirkzee, who instead signed with Manchester United, triggering a domino effect of player movements across Europe.

Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid's manager, is keen on bolstering his attacking options, making Alvarez a prime target.

Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is facing the prospect of a significant player exodus from the Etihad.

Alongside Alvarez, key players such as Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne have been linked with high-profile exits. Additionally, City is reportedly looking to move Jack Grealish and Joao Cancelo.

Despite these potential changes, ESPN claims that Manchester City would prefer to enter the 2024/25 season with the same squad that secured their fourth consecutive Premier League title last term.

Guardiola, who has masterfully led the team to continued success, might see his plans altered by this slew of potential exits.
