Next Everton manager betting odds: Who are the favourites to replace sacked Sean Dyche?

England interim manager Lee Carsley

It’s been a rough 2024/25 season for Sean Dyche, and now The Friedkin Group have completed their purchase of the club they decided to call time on the ‘Ginger Mourinho’. Who will takeover?

Dyche had been in charge at Everton since January 2023 and has pulled them out of the relegation fire twice.

They finished 15th in 2023/24, a season during which they were twice docked points for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

The 2024/25 campaign started badly, with Dyche overseeing four defeats and one draw from five Premier League games so far this term, while Southampton knocked them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

As a result, Dyche dropped to 9/4 to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season, but he staged a mini-revival in September and pulled himself clear of danger.

On September 23, 2024, The Friedkin Group (TFG) reached an agreement to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake in Everton and promised to provide stability to the club and complete the move to the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

The news that restructing at the club had started, after the takeover was completed in December, turned the spotlight back on to Dyche.

Recent results didn't help either. Everton last won a match in early December, the 4-0 win over Wolves, and have now gone five games without a win.

Two consecutive defeats, to Forest and Bournemouth, and rumours of crunch talks with the new owners saw Dyche's odds collapse at the start of the week and by Thursday afternoon he was gone.

Here we take a look at some of the potential managers who could take the hotseat at Everton.

(All odds correct as of article's last update)

David Moyes - 1/2

David Moyes with the Europa Conference League trophy

David Moyes was in charge at Everton for over 11 years, after joining the club from Preston in 2002.

He led the Toffees to four top-six finishes in the Premier League, before leaving for Manchester United… and we all know how badly that went.

His career hit the skids as he failed to blow life into Real Sociedad and then was relegated with Sunderland.

But then two spells at West Ham resurrected his career as he saved them from relegation twice, achieved two consecutive top-seven finishes and then to put a cherry on the top brought the club its first major silverware in 43 years with the 2023 Europa Conference League trophy.

But they are a difficult bunch to please in East London and after much grumbling from the fans he left the club when his contract ran out in the summer of 2024.

It’s reported that the 61-year-old would be open to an approach by Everton, and many fans would welcome him back with open arms.

But would this be a progressive move for Everton given the lofty ambitions of TFG?

Jose Mourinho - 7/4

Jose Mourinho

The Special One is now one of the favourites for the Everton job, as the Friedkin Group pulled the trigger on Dyche.

Mourinho is currently head coach of Fenerbahce in Turkey, but is already taking the authorities to task about how the Suoper Lig is run

A return to the Premier League for Mourinho with Everton would be his fifth spell in England's top flight having previously managed Chelsea twice, Manchester United and Tottenham.

He's also admitted he would be willing to return to a club that is near the bottom of the Premier League...maybe Everton have been winking at him for a while?

However, this could be seen as a slightly unusual move for TFG given that they've already sacked him once from his role as AS Roma, a club they also own.

Mourinho has previously labeled Friedkin as “someone who knows little about football” and described his dismissal at Roma as “unfair”.

Lee Carsley - 5/1

Carsley played over 150 times for Everton and has being doing well whilst caretaking the England job.

Therefore let's shove him near the top of the next Everton manager market, and see what happens just in case, is what the bookies whave done.

Some have him as low as 3/1, others up to 12/1. Pick your poison.

Paulo Fonseca - 12/1

Paulo Fonseca

Sacked by AC Milan a few weeks ago, Fonseca is also being touted as one of the frontrunners for the job.

He's been linked with the Everton job, and several other top flight roles, in the past but he is still to manage in the Premier League and already has a large managerial body count, for someone who is only 51.

He's taken the helm at 12 clubs so far, including Porto, Roma, Lille and most recently AC Milan.

Most of his success in management has come with Shakhtar Donetsk, winning the Ukrainian Premier League three times.

He's a 'sexier' choice than Moyes, but would be big risk for a club looking to avoid the drop.

Edin Terzic - 20/1

Edin Terzic

Terzic is becoming the new Graham Potter of the next manager market. He's being linked with everyone and is already riding high in our next Tottenham manager market.

The 42-year-old took Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final and lost the league title on goal difference to Bayern Munich on the final day of the season.

Claims that the former Borussia Dortmund boss was about to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham started to circulate around Christmas and aren't going away.

But now Everton are starting to sniff around him too.

Gareth Southgate - 40/1

The former England manager has been out of work since he bowed out of the country’s top job after losing the Euro 24 final.

He would bring with him an impressive international tournament record but club-wise less so.

Southgate was relegated while in charge at Middlesbrough and has a miserable 29% win ratio with the club and that hangs over him like a cloud, even though it was over 15 years ago.

Another negative is his style of football with England, which was soporific  – especially at Euro 2024. But does that matter if he pulls the Toffees away from danger?

Southgate could be seen as an uninspired choice but reportedly TFG had identified him as a potential candidate back in the autumn, although that interest appears to have cooled as his price would suggest.

Sam Allardyce - 40/1

Sam Allardyce

The silly train has rolled into the station again. Although I’m sure Sam Allardyce will send his CV in...as will Frank Lampard...and Alan Pardew.

If they were chocolate these guys would eat themselves.

Marti Cifuentes - 50/1

QPR boss Marti Cifuentes

Was a lot higher up this market in autumn, but has fallen away with QPR settling into midtable on the Championship.

He’s also Spanish and has a Pep Guardiola with hair look about him and that's what everyone wants at the moment.

Maurizio Sarri - 50/1

Maurizio Sarri with Serie A trophy while at Jjuventus

The ageing Italian warhorse is looking for a new job after being dumped by Lazio in the summer.

The 65-year-old certainly has the CV. He’s won Serie A with Juventus and the Europa League with Chelsea, and regularly leads his teams to high finishes in the league.

Whether the new owners could handle the chain-smoking temperamental Italian is another matter.

Maurizio Sarri would certainly make the Premier League a little more interesting, as he’s not a fan of media training.

Other Everton manager outsiders to consider:

Thomas Frank (16/1), David Wagner (16/1) and Steve Cooper (14/1) are filling some extra holes in this market but are unlikely to be any higher in the shakedown.

Erik ten Hag could be an interesting but risky punt at 33/1
