Next Everton manager betting odds: Who is the favourite to replace under pressure boss Sean Dyche?
It’s been a rough start to the 2024/25 season for Sean Dyche, and now the Friedkin Group have agreed to buy the club things could get worse for the ‘Ginger Mourinho’. Are they lining up a replacement?
Dyche has been in charge at Everton since January 2023 and has pulled them out of the relegation fire twice.
They finished 15th in 2023/24, a season during which they were twice docked points for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
The 2024/25 campaign has started badly, with Dyche overseeing four defeats and one draw from five Premier League games so far this term, while Southampton knocked them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.
As a result, Dyche dropped to 9/4 to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season.
On September 23, 2024, the Friedkin Group reached an agreement to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake in Everton and promised to provide stability to the club and complete the move to the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Takeovers are rarely good news for incumbent managers, even if the club is doing well. So no doubt Dyche will be shifting nervously in his seat, while the deal is completed.
It will also give a host of managers the chance to dust off their CVs and modernise their presentations if the axe does fall on Dyche.
Here we take a look at some of the potential managers who could take the hotseat at Everton in the future. The odds will arrive when the bookies get their act together and rustle up some markets.
Gareth Southgate
The former England manager has been out of work since he bowed out of the country’s top job after losing the Euro 24 final.
He would bring with him an impressive international tournament record but club-wise less so.
Southgate was relegated while in charge at Middlesbrough and has a miserable 29% win ratio with the club and that hangs over him like a cloud, even though it was over 15 years ago.
Another negative is his style of football with England, which was soporific – especially at Euro 2024. But does that matter if he pulls the Toffees away from danger?
Southgate could be seen as an uninspired choice but reportedly Everton’s prospective owner Dan Friedkin has identified him as a potential candidate.
David Moyes
David Moyes was in charge at Everton for over 11 years, after joining the club from Preston in 2002.
He led the Toffees to four top-six finishes in the Premier League, before leaving for Manchester United… and we all know how badly that went.
His career hit the skids as he failed to blow life into Real Sociedad and then was relegated with Sunderland.
But then two spells at West Ham resurrected his career as he saved them from relegation twice, achieved two consecutive top-seven finishes and then to put a cherry on the top brought the club its first major silverware in 43 years with the 2023 Europa Conference League trophy.
But they are a difficult bunch to please in East London and after much grumbling from the fans he left the club when his contract ran out in the summer of 2024.
It’s reported that the 61-year-old would be open to an approach by Everton, and many fans would welcome him back with open arms. But would this be a progressive move for Everton given the lofty ambitions of the Friedkin Group?
Graham Potter
Until he finds himself a new job, Graham Potter will be on the radar of every club under the sun.
He’s been linked with Premier League clubs, Championships clubs, European clubs and international jobs. He’s probably been linked with the manager’s role at your local M&S Food Hall for all we know.
C’mon Graham this is getting boring, make a move will you or just come out and say you are retiring on the massive payout you got from Chelsea.
Carlos Corberan
West Brom boss Carlos Corberan is the lazy owner’s choice for a club in trouble.
Nothing against Corberan, he’s a fine manager, this is about the selection process.
Over their breakfast of champagne, lobster and the last box of Ricicles ever made, the owner casually glances at the Championship league table, clocks the teams that are near the top and presumes those managers are doing a great job.
They then hand them the keys to a club after a quick Zoom call, while in the back of a limo on the way to a Taylor Swift concert.
The owner is then surprised when their new manager, with little top-flight experience, drowns within the first two months. Just ask Southampton fans about their appointment of Nathan Jones.
Hopefully, the Friedkin Group won’t do this and will have a proper think about the next appointment.
Secondly, and more importantly. Does anyone know where I can get some Ricicles?
Marti Cifuentes
See above, but cheaper, as QPR are not as high up in the Championship table as West Brom.
He’s also Spanish and has a Pep Guardiola with hair look about him and that's what everyone wants at the moment.
Maurizio Sarri
The ageing Italian warhorse is looking for a new job after being dumped by Lazio in the summer.
The 65-year-old certainly has the CV. He’s won Serie A with Juventus and the Europa League with Chelsea, and regularly leads his teams to high finishes in the league.
Whether the new owners could handle the chain-smoking temperamental Italian is another matter.
Maurizio Sarri would certainly make the Premier League a little more interesting, as he’s not a fan of media training.
Sam Allardyce
The silly train has rolled into the station again. Although I’m sure Sam Allardyce will send his CV in...as will Frank Lampard...and Alan Pardew.
If they were chocolate these guys would eat themselves.
