Jurgen Klopp: Xabi Alonso has done an 'exceptional' job at Bayer Leverkusen
Jurgen Klopp has lauded former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso as one of the top young managers rising to prominence after a successful playing career.
Alonso, who is in charge at Bayer Leverkusen, has been touted as a potential replacement for Klopp at Anfield, following his announcement that he will be departing the club at the end of the season.
The 42-year-old has led his team to the top of the German Bundesliga, holding a five-point lead over Bayern Munich.
"Xabi is doing an incredible job," said Klopp.
"How quick his team is that well tuned, for the time it's taken, he's put his proper stamp on it.
"The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department.
"[He is a] former world-class player, from a coaching family as well, which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing.
"The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional."
Alonso enjoyed a successful playing career with the club from 2004 to 2009, clinching prestigious titles such as the Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup, and Community Shield.
After his illustrious stint at Liverpool, Alonso went on to achieve further success with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
In 2022, he took charge of Bayer Leverkusen and has since guided them to an undefeated record in all competitions this season.
