How many Premier League games have ended in a 4-4 draw?
Chelsea and Manchester City played out a thrilling 4-4 draw in the Premier League in early November. It wasn’t the first and it won’t be the last, but it’s still a scoreline that very rarely pops up.
Let’s cut to the chase, 16 games in the Premier League era have ended in 4-4 draw.
Given that there has been thousands and thousands of matches in the Premier League, 16 is just a small drop in the ocean.
But as you’ll see from our list below, like London buses, two can turn up at once.
We’ve had two 4-4 thrillers in 2023 already.
16. Aston Villa 4-4 Leicester City – February 22, 1995
The first 4-4 draw of the Premier League era came nearly three years into its creation and it was played out at Villa Park between Aston Villa and Leicester City.
This was a game that Aston Villa were in full control of as they were 4-1 up until the 77th minute.
But a goal from Iwan Roberts and a late double from David Lowe earned the Foxes a dramatic point.
15. Everton 4-4 Leeds United – October 24, 1999
Premier League fans had to wait over four-and-a-half years for the next 4-4 stalemate which came at Goodison Park between Everton and Leeds United.
The Toffees led three times in this game but then fell behind when Jonathan Woodgate’s 72nd-minute header put the visitors 4-3 in front.
But a late goal from David Weir salvaged a point for the hosts.
14. Bradford City 4-4 Derby County – April 21, 2000
There was another 4-4 draw in the 1999/2000 season with this one coming at Valley Parade between Bradford and Derby. Yes, they were both in the Premier League.
It was the first-half of this game which stole the show with seven goals (including a Dean Windass hat-trick) and a red card.
It was Bradford who led 4-3 before Craig Burley’s 52nd minute equaliser earned Derby a point.
Both Derby and Bradford survived the drop that season.
13. Charlton Athletic 4-4 West Ham United – November 19, 2001
The next 4-4 draw in the Premier League came over 18 months later, in a London derby between Charlton and West Ham.
A Paul Kitson hat-trick and a goal from Jermain Defoe put the Hammers into a 4-3 in the late stages of the game.
But in true West Ham style they folded near the end, Jonathan Johansson bagged a late leveller at the Valley to earn Charlton a point.
12. Tottenham Hotspur 4-4 Leicester City – February 22, 2004
It took 27 months for another 4-4 draw to come around and this time White Hart Lane experienced a crazy encounter between Spurs and eventually relegated Leicester.
It was a 10-man Leicester who took a 4-3 lead in the game before a late Jermain Defoe (yes, him again) equaliser earned Spurs a draw.
11. Norwich City 4-4 Middlesbrough – January 22, 2005
The following season, another 4-4 draw occurred this time at Carrow Road between Norwich and Middlesbrough.
Boro had a 4-1 lead in the game with 80 minutes on the clock but late goals from Dean Ashton, Leon McKenzie, and Adam Drury earned the Canaries the most dramatic of points.
10. Tottenham Hotspur 4-4 Aston Villa – October 1, 2007
The 4-4 draw took a bit of a break for nearly three years, with its next reappearance at White Hart Lane once again, but this time against Aston Villa.
Villa led 4-1 going into the 69th minute but goals from Pascal Chimbonda, Robbie Keane, and Younes Kaboul produced a late fightback to earn the hosts a point in North London.
9. Chelsea 4-4 Aston Villa – December 26, 2007
The only game that has ever ended 4-4 on Boxing Day came at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Aston Villa.
Not only did this game have eight goals shared between the two sides but it also had three red cards in total.
In the end, it was Gareth Barry’s 92nd minute penalty that earned Aston Villa a point.
8. Tottenham Hotspur 4-4 Chelsea – March 20, 2008
The 2007/08 season was certainly the one for producing 4-4 draws for the third time in the Premier League era, it happened at White Hart Lane. This time between Spurs and London rivals Chelsea.
Avram Grant’s Blues led 4-3 at the Lane until Robbie Keane’s 88th minute equaliser earned Spurs a point to dent Chelsea’s title hopes.
7. Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham Hotspur – October 29, 2008
Into the 2008/09 season now and the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham never seems to disappoint and it certainly didn’t on this occasion.
Arsene Wenger’s Gunners led 4-2 until late in the game and looked to have it won.
But very late goals by Spurs’ England duo Jermaine Jenas and Aaron Lennon earned Spurs the most unlikely of draws.
6. Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal – April 21, 2009
Sticking with the 2008/09 campaign, a clash between two Premier League heavyweights in Liverpool and Arsenal produced another 4-4 classic.
This game is mainly remembered for Russian international Andrey Arshavin netting four times at Anfield but it was Yossi Benayoun’s late equaliser which earned the Merseyside Red’s a draw in the end.
5. Newcastle United 4-4 Arsenal – February 5, 2011
We had to wait nearly two years for the next 4-4 draw and this one was arguably the most dramatic in Premier League history, as one team came from 4-0 down.
Newcastle United vs Arsenal at St. James’ Park will live long in many memories.
The Gunners were 4-0 up at half-time but two second-half goals from Joey Barton, one from Leon Best, and a stunning late equaliser from Cheick Tiote earned Newcastle a point on Tyneside.
4. Manchester United 4-4 Everton – April 22, 2012
The first and only ever 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League, and one that severely dented Sir Alex Ferguson’s side’s title hopes in the 2011/12 campaign as United threw a late two-goal lead away.
United were 4-2 up but late goals from Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar earned the Toffees a point.
3. Swansea City 4-4 Wolverhampton Wanderers – April 28, 2012
Just six days later, there was yet another 4-4 draw in the Premier League at the Liberty Stadium between Swansea and a soon to be relegated Wolves.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were 4-1 up after just 31 minutes but a goal from David Edwards and a double from Matt Jarvis earned the West Midlands outfit an unlikely point.
2. Southampton 4-4 Liverpool – May 28, 2023
We then had to wait 11 years for another Premier League game to end 4-4 and it came on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign between an already relegated Southampton and Liverpool.
The Saints looked as though they would be bowing out of the Premier League with a win as they were 4-2 ahead with just under 20 minutes remaining.
However, quickfire goals from Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota earned the Reds a point to end the season and Southampton went down with a whimper.
1. Chelsea 4-4 Manchester City – November 12, 2023
Chelsea and Manchester City shared an incredible eight-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge as Cole Palmer scored a stoppage-time equaliser against his old club to make it 4-4.
Palmer had the final word in the fifth minute of added time, stroking home a spot-kick.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the spot, but then Chelsea turned the game around when Thiago Silva glanced home a corner and Raheem Sterling turned in Reece James’ cross.
But City were level before the break as the unmarked Manuel Akanji headed in Bernardo Silva’s cross.
City went in front again when Haaland scrambled in Julian Alvarez’s cross at the far post two minutes after the restart.
Yet Chelsea again battled back and drew level in the 67th minute, with Nicolas Jackson pouncing after Ederson pushed out Gallagher’s low drive.
Rodri thought he had won it for City when his 86th-minute drive took a wicked deflection, but Palmer kept his nerve to give Chelsea a deserved share of the spoils.
