Goalkeeping conundrum looms large for RB Leipzig

Following his recovery from an ACL injury earlier this season, Peter Gulacsi has reclaimed his position as Leipzig's primary goalkeeper. During his absence, Janis Blaswich's performances earned him a call-up to the German national team.

The acquisition of Vandevoordt from Genk in 2022 was a strategic move by Leipzig, envisioning him as their future goalkeeper. He is expected to join the side in July 2024.

This leaves them with a surplus of talent in the goalkeeping position heading into the summer transfer window.

Sporting director Rouven Schroder shed light on the situation, stating, "No decision has been made yet. But that is of course a very special constellation when you have three goalkeepers so extremely close to each other."

Leopold Zingerle, currently the third-choice goalkeeper, is unlikely to be affected by the impending decision. However, speculations suggest that either Gulacsi or Blaswich could depart in the summer transfer window. 

If Gulacsi leaves, Vandevoordt is poised to assume the role of the number one goalkeeper, while if Blaswich departs, Gulacsi will retain his position with Vandevoordt as backup.

Given Blaswich's strong performances earlier in the season, there is expected to be a market for the 32-year-old goalkeeper. His contract with Leipzig is set to run until 2026, adding another layer of complexity to Leipzig's decision-making process.
