Barcelona transfer news: What lies ahead for Chelsea and Newcastle-linked Ousmane Dembele?

Ousmane Dembele

Ousmane Dembele is being linked with a move away from Spanish giants Barcelona, with multiple clubs reportedly interested in the France international.

With the transfer window edging closer, the Dembele rumour mill has once again started turning.

It's no secret that Barcelona have had major financial issues over the last couple of seasons with the majority of their signings being free agents.

As well as avoiding transfer fees, Barcelona have had to sell players such as Antoine Griezmann and Phillipe Coutinho in order to try and stabilise their finances.

Despite taking all these measures, the club still have to reduce their wage bill by around £176million in order to meet financial fair play regulations.

Dembele was heavily linked with a move away during the summer transfer window to teams such as Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
Due to the skill and talent the French winger possesses, it's no surprise that clubs are still vying for his signature.

The most recent teams who have been linked with a move for the winger are Manchester City, Newcastle United and Chelsea.

While the 25-year-old would be an ideal match for these clubs, Chelsea have only just signed two wingers in Noni Madueke and Mykhalio Mudryk.

If he were to join the West London-based side, he would likely be a rotation option rather than a consistent starting 11 player.

In Newcastle, however, he would undoubtedly become the star player of the entire side.

He was a free agent last summer but chose to extend his stay at the Camp Nou until 2024.

Dembele even took a wage cut in order to be registered for the 2022/23 season.
It is reported that Barcelona are keen to re-sign the winger as he has played in almost every game he has been avaliable for this season.

Despite this, Dembele's renewal has been put down in the pecking order of priorities.

This comes after a Spanish court stopped Barcelona from signing wonderkid Gavi to a professional deal due to their financial situation.

In order to keep their squad together, Barca need to ensure they have enough money to fulfil their already contracted players.

This will perk the ears of any potential suitors as the closer the deal comes to ending, the less they'll have to pay for the winger.
