AFCON: Nigeria defeat Cameroon to secure quarter-final spot
Nigeria advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 2-0 victory over Cameroon in Abidjan.
The Super Eagles victory was led by Ademola Lookman's stellar performance.
Lookman opened the scoring just before halftime, capitalising on a defensive error forced by Victor Osimhen to beat goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa.
He sealed the win in the 90th minute with a volley from Calvin Bassey's assist, sparking jubilation among the Super Eagles.
Despite Cameroon introducing Vincent Aboubakar late in the game, they failed to threaten, registering no shots on target.
Nigeria will face Angola in the quarter-finals after Angola's impressive 3-0 win over Namibia.
The defeat puts pressure on Cameroon coach Rigobert Song, especially after the team's premature exit from the 2022 World Cup.
Playing in the same stadium where they won their first title in 1984, Cameroon looked disjointed, continuing their lacklustre tournament.
While Cameroon has historically bested Nigeria in three Nations Cup finals, recent encounters have favoured the Super Eagles, including their 2-0 victory in this stage of the tournament in 2019.
