James Maddison

Leicester's James Maddison playing for England

Attacking midfielder James Maddison is one of the most technically gifted players in England with multiple years of Premier League experience.

James Maddison is an attacking midfielder who plays for Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team.

He joined Spurs in the summer of 2023 in a transfer worth £40million plus add-ons after five years with Leicester where he won the FA Cup and scored 55 goals in 203 appearances.

Maddison joined Leicester in June 2018 from Norwich City for a fee of around £20m, but endured relegation on the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Maddison made his England debut in 2019 and was part of Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad in 2022 but did not make an appearance in Qatar.

Youth career and first senior start

Maddison signed to Coventry's youth academy at a young age and was included in the first team squad for the 2013/14 League One season.
It was not until August 2014 when he made his senior debut though, coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 League Cup defeat against Cardiff City.
He made his league debut in a 3-1 defeat to Bristol City while his first league start was in the following game against Oldham Athletic. He also scored his first league goal in that game - a free-kick in the first-half - but the Sky Blues went on to lose 4-1.
After an impressive start to the 2014/15 campaign, Maddison was awarded his first professional contract in November 2014. He missed most of the second-half of the season due to picking up an injury in a match against Doncaster Rovers though.
Maddison would stay with Coventry until the end of the 2015/16 season.

Moving to Norwich City

Maddison joined Norwich City in February 2016 on a three-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee. He was immediately loaned back to Coventry City for the remainder of the 2015/16 season and ended his Sky Blues career after making 42 appearances in all competitions.
Maddison made his first-team debut for the Canaries in an EFL Cup tie against his former club Coventry in August 2016.
Soon after, Maddison was loaned to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen for the first part of the 2016/17 season. He made his debut as a substitute against Inverness Caledonian Thistle and scored in his next match against Dundee. He also netted a last-minute winner against Rangers.
After returning from his loan spell, he eventually made his league debut for Norwich in April 2017. He was introduced in the second half and scored in a 3-1 win against Preston North End at Deepdale.
Maddison signed a new four-year contract in June and after the arrival of new head coach Daniel Farke, he was given regular starts during the 2017/18 season.
In 44 Championship appearances, Maddison contributed with an impressive 14 goals and eight assists as Norwich finished in 14th place. He was named Norwich City's Player of the Season at the end of the campaign, as well as receiving a nomination for the EFL Championship Young Player of the Season award.
This would be his last season with Norwich though, but he had achieved a lot, including receiving his first call-up to the England under-21 team in November 2017.

Heading for the Premier League with Leicester City

Maddison joined Leicester in June 2018 on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £20m.

He made his Leicester and Premier League debut in August 2018 against Manchester United in a 2-1 defeat on the opening day of the season.
He scored his first goal in the Premier League the following week in a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. This was followed by back-to-back Premier League goals, both from set-pieces, against AFC Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town.
Overall, he made 38 appearances with seven goals across all competitions as Leicester finished ninth in the Premier League.
In the pandemic-affected 2019/20 season, he made the same number of appearances but this time contributed nine goals and three assists in all competitions. Leicester finished in fifth place in the Premier League, guaranteeing Europa League football.
He agreed a new four-year contract with Leicester in July 2020.

In April 2021, Maddison was one of three players who were dropped from Leicester's squad for the game against West Ham United after breaching Covid-19 protocols.

Despite this, he made 42 appearances with 11 goals and ten assists in all competitions as Leicester finished fifth once again in the Premier League.

In Europe, Leicester made it past the group phase but lost out to Slavia Prague in the Europa League round-of-32.

In the same season, Leicester reached the FA Cup final against Chelsea and came out on top after a 1-0 victory in which Maddison came on as a substitute.
At the start of the 2021/22 season, Leicester faced Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield and Maddison started in a 1-0 victory over them.

That season was Maddison's best statistically with 18 goals and 12 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.

Leicester finished in eighth place in the Premier League and were knocked out of both domestic cups along with their Europa League group. They then reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League after dropping down from the Europa League, losing out to eventual winners Roma over two legs in the competition's inaugural year.
Maddison's ten goals and nine assists were not enough to prevent Leicester's relegation as they finished in 18th place in the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Tottenham moved swiftly to snap up the England midfielder and secured his services in a deal worth £40million plus add-ons.

Maddison agreed a five-year deal with the club and became new boss Ange Postecoglou's third arrival of the summer transfer window.
Ex-Tottenham boss David Pleat recommended Maddison to chairman Daniel Levy when the playmaker was still a teenager at Coventry, but no move was able to materialise and he instead joined Norwich.

James Maddison's England career

Maddison received his first call-up to the senior team in October 2018 for the Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.
Maddison withdrew from the senior squad in October 2019 due to illness but was later seen visiting a casino, although his conduct was defended by then Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.
He made his debut for England in November 2019 when he came on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 56th minute of a 7-0 win over Montenegro in Euro 2020 qualifying.
After a three-year absence, Maddison was named in the 26-man England squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but he did not make an appearance in the tournament.
He made his first start for England in March 2023 in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine.
