Thomas Muller’s iconic moments for Bayern Munich and Germany

A one club man, Thomas Muller is much loved by both Bayern and Germany fans. With over 550 club appearances and over 100 caps for his nation, not to mention a comedic personality, it is easy to see why Muller is such a fan favourite.

After winning nearly everything on offer for both club and country, Muller has left us all with some iconic memories, whether it be last-minute winners, witty remarks or personal accolades.

And, as he raced clean through against England on Tuesday night, few would have bet against him adding to that list.

Sadly, for German fans at least, Muller spurned the opportunity to be his nations's saviour, sliding his shot wide of Jordan Pickford's right-hand post.

Nevertheless, Planet Sport still have plenty of glistening moments from Muller's career to look back on.

Making a name for himself at a young age

Muller graduated from the Bayern Munich academy in 2008 and was integrated into the first team by then-manager Jurgen Klinsmann, making four Bundesliga appearances in his first season as a professional.

It was in his second season that Muller was really able to shine and he featured in every single Bundesliga match for Bayern Munich. In 34 matches he scored 13 goals and had 11 assists.

Golden boot

Muller had big boots to fill at the 2010 World Cup, wearing 13, the number of legendary striker and namesake Gerd - and the number Michael Ballack was due to wear before being ruled out of the tournament with injury.

However, the young attacker duly delivered on the biggest stage of them all, grabbing five goals as Germany finished third. Those five goals put him top of the scoring charts alongside David Villa and Wesley Sneijder, but his superior assist haul (3) meant the 20-year-old won the Golden Boot.

A magical summer in 2014

A silver boot, a 7-1 thrashing of Brazil, and a World Cup victory - undoubtedly the best summer of Thomas Muller's career.

He was an influential player in Germany's incredible 7-1 win against hosts, Brazil. The semi-final win emphasised the togetherness of the German group and they would go on to lift their fourth World Cup, after defeating Argentina in the final.

167 Bundesliga assists and counting!

Muller is not just an out-and-out goalscorer, he is also pretty good at providing goals. In fact, he currently holds the record for the most assists in Bundesliga history with 167.

The energetic Muller collected the ball on the left wing as Bayern looked to counter attack. Muller drove forward at speed before looking up and picking out a pinpoint pass.

The ball was hit low and with power and took out the whole Kaiserslautern backline. Arjen Robben ran on to the magnificent pass and rounded the goalkeeper to finish off the move.

Champions League records

Muller is a prolific goalscorer in the competition too. He boasts the most goals for a German player in the tournament's history, with 48.

Two-time Champions League winner

His first taste of glory in the competition was in 2013, coming against Bayern's bitter Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund. Muller played the full 90 minutes in a central attacking midfield role and ended up on the winning side thanks to strikes from Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben.

Muller added to his collection of medals with another Champions League final win in 2020. Bayern cruised through the rounds, defeating Chelsea and Barcelona along the way before facing off against Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

In a game played behind closed doors in Lisbon, it was the German powerhouses who would be victorious, winning 1-0 courtesy of a second-half finish from Kingsley Coman.

Muller played a big role in breaking the deadlock, finding Joshua Kimmich with a smart pass, who then had time to pick out a cross for Coman.

Filling his trophy cabinet

Very few players can claim to have won 10 league titles in a top flight, but Muller finds himself on the extremely exclusive list.

His first success for Bayern Munich came during the 2009/10 season and he has won an astonishing nine since. He has also won the FIFA Club World Cup twice, the German Cup six times and the German Super Cup six times.

Muller recently overtook Bastian Schweinsteiger as the most decorated German soccer player having won 29 trophies.

It is safe to say the serial winner has lifted almost every trophy there is on offer and he certainly falls into the 'legendary' category in his native Germany. He is now hoping to add a European Championship success to his long list of silverware.

Standing in Germany's way, though, are old rivals England, who will be determined to stop Muller and co from progressing past the round of 16.
