Which teams are making the best start in the NFL?

Isiah Pacheco

The 2025 season has recently started in the NFL. It will continue until January 5 before the postseason ends with Super Bowl LIX on February 9, so there’s a long way to go.

But if we look at the first few games, we can see who has started this season on fire.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs could be set for another historic campaign. They won the last two Super Bowls and if they do it again, they’ll become the first franchise to win three in a row.

Notable draft signings include Xavier Worthy and Kingsley Suamataia, but it’s the existing pool of talents like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce who have seen Kansas installed as early favourites to win the Super Bowl at the end of this season.

The odds have been justified so far, as the Chiefs blasted to a 3-0-win record in the first few games against the Baltimore Ravens, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Atlanta Falcons.

This strong start compared to a lacklustre preseason where the highlight of a loss to the Detroit Lions was an outrageous behind-the-back pass from Mahomes to Kelce.

Tougher challenges lie ahead, but the Chiefs team has a strong defence and has shown that it has got what it takes to grind out wins’ week after week.

If you want to bet on them but don’t want to look as far ahead as the Super Bowl, you might want to look at each upcoming game. As well as betting on the winner, you can also look at wagers like NFL over under bets.

This is a wager for someone who understands a team's chances of scoring points at one end and keeping them out at the other. Rather than predicting the overall winner, you’re betting on the total number of points scored in the game.

Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills are also listed among the favourites to win the Super Bowl this year. It’s expected to be a season of transition for the franchise, with several experienced players leaving and the likes of Keon Coleman and Cole Bishop joining in the draft.

Stefon Diggs may be the biggest loss to the team but there’s a feeling that Buffalo needs to move up a level after winning the last few AFC East division titles without adding a Super Bowl win.

Preseason started poorly but the regular season has seen the Bill explode into life with wins over the Arizona Cardinals, the Miami Dolphins, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. QB Josh Allen has made a strong start and is already being tipped by some analysts as an NFL MVP contender.

A hand injury limited his impact in the game against the Dolphins, but he still managed to come up with some impressive moments.

They’ve consistently reached the postseason stage in recent years but have been knocked out several times by the Chiefs. If you think history will repeat itself, you might prefer to bet on them winning the AFC East division title again, rather than the Super Bowl. They’re favourites ahead of the New York Jets in this division.

Philadelphia Eagles

Another team that’s expected to perform well this season, Philadelphia finished in second place in the NFC East last season before losing Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox.

There have been some substantial changes in the coaching set-up too, with the early signs showing that this could be reflected in a positive season for the Eagles.

Their first competitive game saw them beat the Green Bay Packers before a loss to the Atlanta Falcons rocked them.

However, the third game was a hard-fought win against the New Orleans Saints, marking the franchise’s first win on the road against the Saints since 2007. Head coach Nick Sirianni spoke afterwards about how of a team win it was.

Detroit Lions

The Lions won the NFC North title with a 12-5 record last season. Terrion Arnold was their pick in the first round of the draft and a 26-20 win against the Los Angeles Rams got the 2024 season off to a strong start. After that, they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before winning on the road against the Arizona Cardinals.

Punter Jack Fox was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the win at State Farm Stadium. A robust performance by the Detroit defence helped ensure that their start to this season remains solid.

The franchise isn’t one of the favourites for the Super Bowl, but they’ll be hoping to build momentum from a strong start and maybe emulate the Texas Rangers’ unexpected run to the MLB World Series last year.

These are the franchises that have made headlines for the right reasons so far. However, there’s a long way to go in this season and many twists still to come before we find out who wins the Super Bowl this time.
