Williams plan strategic upgrades to finish 2024 season on a high
In an effort to rejuvenate their Formula 1 campaign, Williams are embarking on a comprehensive three-pronged upgrade to enhance their car's performance.
Despite a promising 2023 season, where the FW45 excelled on low-downforce tracks and enabled Alex Albon to secure valuable points, the 2024 car, designated FW46, has struggled to maintain competitiveness.
The FW46 has faced significant challenges in the midfield, frequently being outpaced by rival teams such as Red Bull Racing and Haas.
As a result, Williams has only accumulated four points as they approach the summer break, while Sauber remains point-less.
Team Principal James Vowles is maintaining a long-term vision for the team's progress, with a particular focus on the 2025 season.
However, immediate efforts are being directed at enhancing the current car.
Post-summer break, Williams aims to address three critical areas: aerodynamics, suspension design, and car weight reduction. The latter has been a notable issue throughout the first half of the season.
Williams' commitment to these upgrades is part of a broader strategy to bolster their performance and climb the Constructors' Championship standings.
"We have updates coming up this summer break - I hope in Zandvoort and I hope again in Baku or the race after Baku which is Singapore," Vowles said at Spa.
"What I can tell you is there are substantive numbers that should add up to us being back in a position of fighting for points.
"It's achieved through a number of things. It's aerodynamic updates, you're going see a suspension update, and you're going see weight coming off the car. So it's fundamentally three core routes wherever we're doing this.
"In the world of Formula 1 they're big steps, but my reticence is you've now watched RB who had an update to take it off, Mercedes had an update but took it off. You don't normally see that, teams have confidence in what they do."
With a focus on both immediate improvements and long-term development, the team hopes to close the gap with their competitors and build a more competitive car for the future.
