Williams keep options open for 2025 F1 driver line-up
Williams team principal James Vowles had declared his intention to remain open-minded regarding the team's driver line-up for the next F1 season.
While Alex Albon had been secured with a multi-year extension, the identity of his teammate for the 2025 campaign remained undecided.
Logan Sargeant, who occupied the seat alongside Albon, was widely expected not to be retained due to another challenging season. Speculation abounded with names like Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas being linked to the position.
However, Vowles emphasized that the primary focus was on improving the car's performance.
"We were continually evaluating the situation," Vowles informed the media. "What we've communicated to Logan is that it's a meritocracy. He must earn his place in the sport continuously.
"This has been the consistent message for the past 18 months. We are open-minded about our options."
Vowles was clear that the car's performance was the critical issue. "Our car isn't quick enough, and this responsibility falls on my shoulders and the team's. It's not a driver issue we suffer from today.
"We've been out-developed, and we need to accelerate our development process," he stated.
During the first free practice session at Silverstone last weekend, Williams fielded rookie driver Franco Colapinto, who had been excelling in Formula 2.
Vowles clarified that this was a reward for Colapinto's strong F2 season rather than a test for his F1 capabilities.
"It was a reward for a very strong Formula 2 season," Vowles explained. "I believe in recognizing the achievements of our young drivers. We invested in Logan and will continue to invest in our young driver program. Today's session wasn't a test or showcase; it was simply a reward for his progress. We have to conduct two FP1 sessions in a season, and it made sense to do it here at Silverstone."
Looking ahead, the next event in the 2024 F1 calendar was the Hungarian Grand Prix, scheduled for the weekend of 19-21 July. This would be the 13th race of the season, taking place over 70 laps of the 4.381-kilometre Hungaroring in Budapest on Sunday, July 21.
