F1 news: Red Bull's new upgrades inspired by 2022 Williams
Williams gave Red Bull the idea for the recent update to their car.
Red Bull has unveiled that the recent modifications to the floor and diffuser, introduced during the Spanish Grand Prix, were inspired by Williams.
In their pursuit to enhance the performance of the RB19, Red Bull implemented changes to the edge floor and the upper corner of the diffuser prior to the Barcelona race weekend.
Notably, the alterations made at the rear of the car, which involved shaping the top corners of the diffuser with increased curvature, were particularly intriguing as the team openly acknowledged that it was an idea borrowed from other vehicles.
Red Bull stated in a note to the FIA: "A small increase in local load towards the trailing edge of the diffuser profile in the upper corners has been extracted with a more curved profile taking inspiration from competitor designs."
Although specific details were not initially provided, Red Bull has now disclosed that these design adjustments had been under consideration for some time, after first observing them on a Williams car back in 2022.
"If you look, that piece of floor design that was out early 2022. I recall the Williams had it quite early on and some other people had it," Red Bull's chief engineer Paul Monaghan told Motorsport.com.
"It didn't necessarily work for us then, but we've looked at it a couple of times, and it's a small benefit. It looks like a slightly larger change than is actually realised, as it's coming towards the back of the floor.
"So it's not going to be the most influential thing, but it helps a little bit. And you're quite constrained height-wise, where we can do it.
"It's been there for a while in our work. But we were in a position where we could include that in that local bit of the floor, and we've done it."
