Las Vegas Grand Prix: A dive into the unknown for Formula 1 teams

The city's famous 'Strip' adds a unique twist to the race, promising an unforgettable experience.

As the anticipation builds, teams have been pushing their limits in the simulator, attempting to grasp the nuances of the 14-turn, six-kilometre street circuit. Pirelli, the tyre supplier, are playing a crucial role, opting for the three softest tyre compounds due to the expected low surface grip conditions.

Mario Isola, Pirelli's head of F1, sheds light on the challenge ahead, stating, "It is a step into the unknown, for everybody I believe. Las Vegas will be cold, it's a street circuit." The lack of familiarity with the track poses a significant challenge, with teams relying on pre-event simulations to understand the tire demands of the circuit.

Isola explains, "We were working with the teams and we asked them for simulations in advance to try to understand how much energy the layout of the aircraft is putting on tires." However, despite the preparations, there remain numerous uncertainties, with Las Vegas presenting a unique set of variables for the Formula 1 community.

Qualifying adds an extra layer of complexity, scheduled at midnight local time with temperatures expected to be around four or five degrees. Alexander Albon anticipates a challenging scenario, stating, "I wonder if we're doing three or four prep laps for qualifying. It will be a tough one." 

The cold conditions pose a dilemma, as drivers may need multiple laps to get their tires up to temperature before attempting a fast lap.

The 14-turn street circuit promises high speeds, with top velocities reaching around 342 kilometres per hour on the lengthy straight across the strip. This not only adds a thrilling element to the race but also positions the Las Vegas Grand Prix as a contender to rival the legendary speeds seen at Monza.

As the Formula 1 community descends upon Las Vegas, the stage is set for a captivating weekend of racing. With the unknowns of the street circuit and the challenge of adapting to cold temperatures, drivers and teams are poised for an unpredictable Grand Prix that will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on the F1 calendar.
