Jonathan Wheatley exits Red Bull for Audi team principal role
Red Bull Racing have confirmed the departure of Jonathan Wheatley, who has left the team to assume the team principal role at Audi.
Wheatley, who has been a cornerstone of Red Bull's sporting department, is a pivotal figure in the team's success over nearly two decades.
Wheatley joined Red Bull in their formative years and worked closely with Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. His tenure saw Red Bull clinch six Constructors' Championships and seven Drivers' Championships.
As the sporting director, Wheatley's strategic acumen and leadership were instrumental in these achievements.
"Jonathan's contribution over 18 years has been remarkable," said Christian Horner, Red Bull's team principal. "His work as team manager and sporting director has been a significant part of our history.
"His role in securing six world constructors' titles and seven world drivers' championships will always be remembered."
Wheatley is set to remain with Red Bull until the end of the 2024 F1 season, ensuring a smooth transition as the team defended their titles. Following this period, Wheatley will officially be joining Audi in 2025.
Audi, poised to enter Formula 1 in 2026, will take over the Sauber-run team, currently branded as Stake. Wheatley's appointment is a key move in Audi's strategy to establish itself as a competitive force in the sport.
Recently, Audi also appointed Mattia Binotto as the Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer, marking another significant change. Binotto's arrival resulted in the departure of Oliver Hoffmann and Andreas Seidl from the project.
"Everyone at Oracle Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technology wishes Jonathan all the best in his new role," Horner added. "We are grateful for his immense contributions and look forward to announcing a new team structure soon.
"Red Bull Racing has tremendous strength and depth, providing opportunities for others within the team."
Wheatley's exit comes at a time when Red Bull are focused on maintaining their dominance in Formula 1. The team have confirmed that they will unveil a new team structure in the coming weeks to adapt to Wheatley's departure and ensure continued success.
As the current F1 season enters its summer break, teams are already strategising for the second half of the F1 championship. The season is set to resume on Friday, 23 August, with teams gearing up for a competitive return.
