Jacques Villeneuve predicts Fernando Alonso as Lewis Hamilton's successor at Mercedes
Ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 season, the motorsport world was rocked by Lewis Hamilton's surprising announcement of his move to Ferrari at the end of the campaign.
This decision marks the conclusion of Hamilton's illustrious partnership with Mercedes, during which he clinched six Drivers' titles in the past 11 years.
Jacques Villeneuve, the esteemed former F1 world champion, expressed his astonishment at the timing of Hamilton's move, emphasizing its unprecedented nature. Villeneuve remarked to La Gazzetta dello Sport, "I'm amazed. Above all due to the timing. An announcement like this is now something never seen before." He added, "The feeling is that Mercedes is missing something, and I don't think it will get back on its feet in two years. So Lewis is right to go to Ferrari."
Speculation has been rife regarding Hamilton's successor at Mercedes, with numerous drivers' contracts set to expire at the end of the year.
Villeneuve, drawing from his own championship-winning experience, advocated for the return of Fernando Alonso, citing the seasoned Spaniard's prowess and experience. "Fernando Alonso. That would be fantastic," Villeneuve exclaimed. "Also because you cannot take another young driver like Russell, not at Mercedes."
With Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff at the helm, Villeneuve drew parallels to the strategic manoeuvrings of Flavio Briatore, suggesting that Wolff would likely have a clear vision for the team's future driver line-up.
As Formula 1 enthusiasts eagerly await the 2024 season, the stage is set for a thrilling showdown of talent and ambition. The Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir will host the official pre-season testing from February 23-25, providing teams with the first opportunity to showcase their potential and set the tone for the upcoming campaign.
