Ferrari's Frederic Vasseur weighs in on Formula 1 points system

Formula 1 is abuzz with talks of potential changes to the points system, with Ferrari's team principal Frederic Vasseur, adding his perspective to the debate.

Reflecting on his tenure with Alfa Romeo, Vasseur expressed openness to the proposed alterations, citing past frustrations.

"In Formula 1, every position counts. Even finishing just outside the points can be a bitter pill to swallow," Vasseur remarked, alluding to the proposed expansion of points-paying positions from the top 10 to the top 12.

However, Vasseur cautioned that this adjustment might not entirely resolve the underlying issues.

"While expanding the points system could alleviate some frustrations, it may not address the core challenge," he added.

The push for changes stems from a growing divide in F1, with five dominant teams hoarding the majority of points while the rest struggle to keep pace.

Vasseur suggested that this could change with the introduction of new regulations in 2026.

"Adjusting the points system is one step, but we must remain vigilant as the sport evolves," Vasseur emphasized.

Despite the potential benefits, a decision on the matter was deferred at a recent F1 Commission meeting. Speculation suggests that leading teams, along with those at the tail end of the grid, may favour the proposed rule change.

As the sport awaits a resolution, attention turns to the upcoming F1 Miami Grand Prix, the sixth race of the 2024 season. Scheduled for May 5 at the Miami International Autodrome, anticipation builds for another thrilling chapter in Formula 1 history.
