Fernando Alonso: Aston Martin changed everything for me

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin celebrates on podium after finishing 3rd in the season opener Formula One Grand Prix of Bahrain - March 2023

A resurgent Fernando Alonso has heaped praise on Aston Martin for providing him with a fast car.

Age is but a number for the effervescent Fernando Alonso.

Aston Martin's competitive package has got veteran Alsono off to flying start in the 2023 season, earning four podiums in the opening five races, enough to put him third in the drivers' standings.

The former two-time World Champion has always backed himself to compete on at the front end of the track even after his heyday at Ferrari in the mid-2000s, seemingly an eon ago. But unfortunately at McLaren and then Alpine, he didn't have the machinery.
Fast forward to 2023 and Alonso - who turns 42 years young in July - is competing with the best the sport has to offer.
"I've been always working hard, but I didn't have probably the team believing in my performance, in my ability to set up the car as well and to move forward," the Spaniard told crash.net.
"And also I never had a fast car as I have now. So I think that's the reason. I didn't change anything but Aston Martin changed everything for me."
Reflecting on the past, Alonso even threw a jab at his old team, Ferrari, who he won two world championships with.
"Adrian Newey created a car of another level with Red Bull," he continued.
"The same thing that Mercedes did during the Hamilton/Bottas years. When I was in Ferrari, we were always close to them, and we never made a mistake; we fought for the world championship for three of the four years until the last race, thanks to our consistency.
"Fortunately for us, there is a little more inconsistency in Ferrari now, and we make more points than them."
Aston Martin are currently second in the constructor's standings, 24 points ahead of fourth-placed Ferrari, who have had two retirements in five races.
