Sergio Perez hails podium triumph after 'terrible' Monza Grand Prix qualifying
Red Bull's Sergio Perez expressed his contentment after securing a podium finish at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, despite a challenging qualifying session.
During the Q3 session at Monza, the Mexican driver found himself starting from the fifth position on the grid, lagging behind George Russell. An early tussle ensued between the two rivals.
Facing a resolute defence from the Mercedes driver, Perez capitalised on superior tyre management within the RB19, ultimately securing his path to the podium.
Subsequently, Perez overtook both Ferrari cars, though not without a few close encounters with Carlos Sainz in the battle for second place, ultimately finishing just six seconds behind his teammate Max Verstappen.
Reflecting on his performance, Perez acknowledged the difficulties he encountered during the weekend. "Very pleased – but we had a terrible Saturday in terms of the issues we had in FP3 with the car that really put us back in qualifying," Perez told reporters.
He further noted, "I think we could have had a better starting position, which definitely would have put us a lot closer in the fight for victory. But certainly, we made a lot of progress, which is a positive thing."
Perez also highlighted the improvements in the car's setup and suspension, making him feel more at ease on the track.
Looking ahead, the Formula 1 calendar brings the Singapore Grand Prix, scheduled for the weekend of 15-17 September, offering a physically demanding challenge with its bumpy 5.063km Marina Bay Circuit and humid conditions.
