Pirelli counters George Russell's concerns on Formula 1 tyre blanket ban in 2024

Tyre manufacturer Pirelli have responded strongly to George Russell's expressed concerns about the readiness of Formula 1 for a tyre blanket ban in 2024.

Pirelli, the renowned tyre manufacturer, have firmly responded to George Russell's apprehensions about the proposed tyre blanket ban in Formula 1 for 2024.

The skilled Mercedes driver, expressing his concerns after participating in the post-Barcelona test, questioned the readiness of the tyres "in a racing scenario".
Despite acknowledging the suitability of the circuit for evaluating tyre performance under high-speed and high-stress conditions, Russell believed it did not accurately represent the challenges drivers would face throughout the season.
However, Pirelli engineer Simone Berra, confident in the data gathered, indicated that drivers should adapt their driving styles to accommodate the change.
"In terms of safety, I don't see any specific risk based on the data I've reviewed. Drivers must definitely modify their approach in the first lap," he stated during a media interaction.
"Drivers will need to adjust their driving style to protect the tyres as excessive pushing in the initial corners with cold tyres can cause graining," Berra explained. "I certainly respect the drivers' opinions, but differences will naturally arise compared to the previous tyre models, impacting tyre management."
The final decision on the ban will be determined by the FIA, F1, and the teams after conducting further tests at Silverstone subsequent to the British Grand Prix, following the submission of Pirelli's report.
Russell expressed great concern about the safety of his mechanics in the pit lane during pit stops and predicted, "There would be crashes, I have no doubt," if the tyre blanket ban were implemented.
His worries were shared by Lewis Hamilton, who labelled the switch "dangerous" if it proceeds.
Nonetheless, Pirelli remains confident that their construction allows for race-ready tyres, designed specifically to reach optimal temperatures faster than the current specification.
"We believe the tyres are suitable for racing; otherwise, they would not be submitted for evaluation," clarified Berra.
"While colder conditions might present challenges in warming up the tyres, it's a matter of managing the initial portion of the lap."
Test data suggests that it is possible to achieve adequate tyre temperature in the first sector, matching the temperatures obtained with tyre blankets, according to Berra.
He further elaborated, "The discrepancies are more noticeable in the first sectors, as sectors two and three align with lap times achieved using blankets."
"The key lies in skilfully navigating the first few corners and exercising caution."
The upcoming Austrian Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, 2 July at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, marking the next event on the F1 calendar.
