McLaren's Oscar Piastri expresses optimism in chasing down Red Bull dominance

Oscar Piastri of McLaren 9 Jul 2023

Formula 1 prodigy Oscar Piastri remains hopeful that McLaren can bridge the gap to Red Bull by 2026, despite Red Bull's current dominance in the sport.

Piastri's optimism comes in contrast to Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc's belief that Red Bull's stranglehold on the championship will persist for the next three years, as they have claimed victory in all 14 races of the season thus far.

McLaren's journey this season has been a testament to their resilience. After a sluggish start, they managed to turn their fortunes around, igniting hopes of challenging Red Bull's supremacy.

When asked about their chances of catching Red Bull, Piastri told the media, "I would like to hope we can catch them in that time. Do I think it's going to be difficult? Yes. They started the regulation cycle so strong last year, they've been even stronger this year."

Piastri's optimism is buoyed by the new Aerodynamic Testing Restriction rules, which provide teams further down the Constructors' Championship standings an opportunity to narrow the gap with their rivals.

He pointed out, "But I think seeing Aston Martin over the winter break and McLaren from one weekend to the next, us two teams have showed that you can make a big turnaround in a short period of time. Through dedication, hard work, and following the right directions.

"Of course we're still a bit of a chunk off Red Bull, but also with the way the rules are with aero and wind tunnel time and stuff like that, it should bring everyone closer. But yeah, I hope we can beat them. I'm maybe a bit more optimistic than Charles, but it's not gonna be easy."

The upcoming challenge for the Formula 1 teams is the Singapore Grand Prix, scheduled for the weekend of 15-17 September, marking the 16th race of the season.

This demanding track, the Marina Bay Circuit, spans 5.063 kilometres of bumpy street surface and subjects drivers to humid conditions, testing their skills and endurance.

While the road ahead may be challenging, Piastri's optimism reflects the determination and spirit of McLaren, as they aim to dethrone the current champions, Red Bull.
