Liberty Media’s Greg Maffei expects three US Formula 1 Grands Prix to become unique
Liberty Media CEO, Greg Maffei, anticipates that each of the three Formula 1 Grands Prix in the United States will develop its distinctiveness over time.
Formula 1, under the ownership of Liberty Media, has seen a surge in popularity in the United States, a market the series has long sought to establish a foothold in.
With the addition of the Miami Grand Prix to the calendar in 2022, alongside the official United States Grand Prix in Austin, and the upcoming race in Las Vegas for 2023, it will be the second time in the history of the World Championship that one country has hosted three races in a calendar year.
Speaking on a Liberty investor call, CEO Greg Maffei expressed his belief that each of the three races will eventually develop their own unique characteristics.
"The fan festivals at Austin, given where it is, and the spread it has are not going to be matched in either Miami or in Las Vegas," said Maffei. "What is available doesn't do it. The tower they have, the concert they have, the way they do it is hard to beat and it is a very distinct experience."
He also noted that Miami has its own distinctive features, stating, "Miami has a lot of things that are very distinctive as well, and then obviously those tracks have different forms, Miami is different from Austin, and then we're going to have a street and a night race."
Maffei acknowledged that Miami and Las Vegas are relatively new additions to the Formula 1 calendar, but he is confident that they will develop their own character and distinctiveness over time.
"They all have distinctive differences, and I think they will develop their character. Miami is fairly new, [Las Vegas] is totally new. They'll develop their character and distinctiveness over time," said Maffei.
With the 2023 Formula schedule for the Americas featuring races in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, alongside the new addition of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Formula 1 fans in the region are in for an exciting season with each race offering its own unique experience.
