Lewis Hamilton to wear rainbow-liveried helmet in support of LGBTQ community at Miami GP
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton will be sporting a rainbow-liveried helmet at the upcoming Miami Grand Prix in protest against Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has announced that he will wear a rainbow-liveried helmet at this weekend's Miami Grand Prix in response to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signing the Parental Rights in Education Act into law.
The legislation prohibits schools from providing instruction or discussion on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Hamilton, who has been an advocate for equality on various issues, has previously donned race helmets displaying the rainbow colours, such as in the 2021 race in Qatar.
Expressing his disagreement with the Governor's decision, Hamilton stated his intention to use his platform to support the LGBTQ community. "I really do continue to stand with the LGBTQ community, and I'm wearing the rainbow flag on my helmet this weekend, and I just really want to continue to support the community here and let them know that I stand with them, and I hope that they continue to fight against it," Hamilton told media.
He also highlighted that the issue lies with the decision-makers in government rather than the people of Miami. "It's not the people of Miami that are making these decisions, it's the people in government, and that's the issue," he said.
"Whilst I'm here I'm just going to try to continue to be supportive, and just by being here and having that on my helmet, hopefully that that speaks volumes."
By wearing the rainbow-liveried helmet, Hamilton sends a powerful message of solidarity with the LGBTQ community and raises awareness about the need for equality and inclusion.
