Lando Norris: Teaming up with Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren made me a better Formula 1 driver

Lando Norris of McLaren 25 Feb 2023

McLaren's rising star, Lando Norris, believes his time as Daniel Ricciardo's teammate has made him a better Formula 1 driver.

Lando Norris, the Formula 1 driver, credits his two-year partnership with Daniel Ricciardo for his improved skills on the track.
Despite Ricciardo securing McLaren's sole victory during their time together in 2021 and 2022, Norris outperformed the Australian driver, who had a disappointing 2022 season that led to his contract termination and subsequent replacement by rookie Oscar Piastri.
As the de facto lead driver for McLaren, Norris has amassed 12 points in the first six races of 2023, surpassing Piastri's five points. Norris, however, expressed that the younger Australian has been pushing him harder than Ricciardo did.
In a statement to the media, Norris said, "Everyone should see that Daniel was struggling with something, and Oscar doesn't seem to be grappling with the same issues." He acknowledged Ricciardo's superior experience but noted that Piastri's pace was more on par with his own, often surpassing it.
Norris, while recognizing Ricciardo's influence in his development as both a person and a driver, stated, "Daniel was still faster in certain races and times, and he pushed me in many ways.
"His experience and mindset were always crucial in helping me evolve. However, Oscar's proximity in terms of pace has been consistently closer to me than Daniel's ever was. That's why Oscar has pushed me further."
Looking ahead to the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Norris anticipates variable weather conditions. While the event traditionally enjoys dry and sunny days, the forecast suggests a possibility of rain during the weekend, following the mixed conditions experienced in Monaco last week.
