Carlos Sainz optimistic about Ferrari's prospects in Qatar Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz of Ferrari 5 Mar 2023

In the build-up to the Qatar Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has expressed hope that the weekend's revised format could provide a boost to the Scuderia, which has faced challenges this season.

This weekend, Formula 1 enthusiasts can expect a different race weekend structure as the Qatar Grand Prix embraces the F1 Sprint format. Unlike the usual practice sessions, there will be only one practice session before the competitive sessions begin.

Ferrari, however, face some apprehension about their performance on the Losail International Circuit. In the previous race in Japan, the team encountered difficulties after securing their sole non-Red Bull victory of the season in Singapore.

Throughout the campaign, Ferrari have grappled with significant tire degradation issues. Furthermore, their drivers have noted the unpredictable handling characteristics of their car, particularly through corners.

In an attempt to address these challenges, the Italian squad introduced a new floor for their car in Japan. Carlos Sainz, however, remains cautious about its potential effectiveness and suggests it might be too early to determine its impact.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, Sainz acknowledged the challenging nature of the Losail circuit for Ferrari. "I anticipate that the track layout will not favour Ferrari," he admitted.

Nonetheless, Sainz remains optimistic about the team's chances, especially given the unique weekend format. "I think you can see with our car, it's a bit like that, how we can go in Singapore from winning the race to in Japan being 40 or 50 seconds off the race leader," he observed.

The unpredictable nature of Ferrari's performance this season has prompted Sainz to adopt a pragmatic approach: "I don't care. If the car is there to finish P7 on Sunday, I want to finish P7. If the car is there to be P3, I want to be P3."

Sainz also pointed out Ferrari's historical strength on sprint weekends, hinting that this could be an advantage. "We're a team that normally performs well on sprint weekends. So hopefully that compensates for the track characteristics," he added.

As F1 fans await the Qatar Grand Prix, it promises to be the 17th thrilling race of the season. The Losail International Circuit, a permanent venue situated just outside of Lusail, north of Doha, will host the event. Formula 1 drivers will continue to push the limits of their skills and machinery in their quest for victory in what is shaping up to be an exciting race weekend.
