Audi's firm Formula 1 commitment: Set to join the grid in 2026
Audi's new CEO, Gernot Dollner, has emphatically reaffirmed the auto-maker's dedication to entering the Formula 1 arena by 2026.
Addressing rumours that surfaced in recent months, Dollner clarified that Audi's commitment remains unwavering, dispelling uncertainties surrounding the formation of their F1 team.
Audi's strategic move involves acquiring a majority share in the Sauber Group, aligning with the upcoming technical regulations set to reshape the F1 landscape. Dollner's assurance follows the footsteps of former CEO Markus Duesmann, the visionary leader behind Audi's pioneering decision to venture into F1.
Taking the reins from Duesmann, Dollner emphasized the board's unequivocal support for the F1 venture. He told Handelsblatt, "There is a clear decision from the board of management and the supervisory boards of Audi and Volkswagen that Audi will enter Formula 1 in 2026. The plan is in place." This declaration puts to rest any doubts surrounding Audi's involvement in the pinnacle of motorsport.
Alessandro Alunni Bravi, representing Sauber, shed light on Audi's subdued communication, attributing it to the recently concluded partnership with Alfa Romeo. The collaboration's conclusion in 2023 paved the way for Audi to unveil their plans more openly. Notably, Audi are not only set to become a team owner but are also investing significantly in the construction of a Power Unit, showcasing a comprehensive commitment to the F1 project.
Dollner hinted at a shift in decision-making dynamics within the company, noting, "We used to have a very complex landscape of committees. That is why we have now abolished an entire level of committees below the executive board… in short: we are now faster, and all-important decisions are once again made by the entire executive board team."
As the 2023 F1 season concludes, the focus shifts to the anticipation of the 2024 season. Teams and drivers will enjoy a well-deserved break before gearing up for official pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit. This three-day event, scheduled for February 23-25, marks a crucial juncture for teams to fine-tune their machines ahead of the highly anticipated racing season.
Audi's looming entry in 2026 adds an extra layer of excitement to the evolving F1 landscape.
