Aston Martin's Mike Krack keen on extending Fernando Alonso's Formula 1 contract
Aston Martin's team principal, Mike Krack, has expressed strong enthusiasm about retaining Fernando Alonso beyond the upcoming Formula 1 season.
Alonso, who signed a two-year deal with Aston Martin after departing Alpine, showcased his prowess in a successful debut season with the Silverstone-based squad, securing eight podium finishes.
Despite being the oldest driver on the grid at 43 by the end of the next season, Alonso's skill and impact on the team have impressed Krack. The team have explicitly stated that age is not a concern, emphasizing their confidence in Alonso's capabilities.
In response to media inquiries about extending Alonso's contract, Krack left no room for ambiguity, stating, "I think I don't have to answer that question. Absolutely yes!" This affirmation reflects the team's eagerness to continue the successful partnership with the veteran driver.
Alonso concluded the season in a commendable fourth place, marking his highest Drivers' Championship result since 2013. Reflecting on their first term together, Krack emphasized the positive influence Alonso has had on the team.
"As a team, we were blown away from the first day – until today actually," Krack said. He highlighted Alonso's constructive and team-oriented approach, noting the Spaniard's resilience during challenging times. Krack pointed to instances like the race in Mexico, where both drivers showed their team spirit by refraining from public criticism despite difficulties, a testament to their unity.
Looking ahead, as the current 2023 F1 season wraps up, teams and drivers are set for a well-deserved break before the new year. The 2024 season will kick off with official F1 pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, the home of the Bahrain Grand Prix, in Sakhir from February 23-25. This break allows teams to regroup, strategise, and fine-tune their cars for the challenges of the upcoming season.
Aston Martin's commitment to continuity is evident in their desire to extend Fernando Alonso's contract. The seasoned driver has not only delivered strong performances but has also played a crucial role in fostering a positive team spirit. As the F1 community anticipates the 2024 season, all eyes will be on the Silverstone-based team and their quest for sustained success with Alonso at the helm.
