Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso voices concerns over 'record-breaking' Formula 1 calendar
As Formula 1 gears up for a record-breaking 2024 season, Fernando Alonso has expressed his apprehension about the added stress it could impose on the team crew.
Fernando Alonso has raised concerns about the potential strain that Formula 1's record-breaking 2024 calendar could place on team crew members.
Since Alonso's debut in 2001, the sport's schedule has experienced rapid growth. Initially, the calendar featured 17 races held between March and October. However, with the inclusion of China and Imola for the upcoming season, F1 will finally reach its target of completing a season with more races than the previous record of 22.
In recent years, Formula 1 has witnessed a significant surge in interest, resulting in record attendances at circuits worldwide. With new destinations eager to join the calendar, the sport's leadership is keen on expanding to capitalize on revenue and foster further growth. Nevertheless, classic venues remain crucial to ensure the loyal fanbase remains engaged and doesn't become disillusioned with the sport's direction.
When questioned by reporters about the congested calendar ahead of the British Grand Prix, Alonso shared his thoughts with the media, stating, "It is difficult."
"I understand all the benefits of having 24 races and the reasons behind scheduling so many races," he continued. "There is a lot of interest in Formula 1, and there is demand. So, it is good to visit new countries and races. This year, we have Vegas, a few years ago it was Qatar, and it is great to introduce the sport to new countries."
He acknowledged the financial benefits of an expanded calendar, saying, "There is more revenue for everyone, so I understand that. But I believe that 18 races are a good number for team members."
Alonso expressed concern about the toll on mechanics, media, and everyone involved from February to December. "With more than 18 or 19 races, the stress on everyone intensifies. As drivers, we have all the comforts, and they try to take care of us as much as they can, so we cannot complain too much. But I understand it's challenging for everyone else."
As the British Grand Prix approaches on Sunday, 9 July, Formula 1 enthusiasts will eagerly anticipate the thrilling race at the iconic Silverstone Circuit.
