Aston Martin boss Mike Krack praises Fernando Alonso's quick-wittedness at Australian Grand Prix
Fernando Alonso’s quick-wittedness after the Lap 57 restart at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix didn't go unnoticed by Aston Martin boss Mike Krack.
In response to the red flags that resulted in several cars being eliminated, Alonso saw an opportunity to regain his position and suggested reinstating the previous grid order for the final lap.
Krack believed that Alonso's reaction was "typical", given his sharp memory and knowledge of previous races. He said, "He remembers every race that he has done and what happened and what we should look at. It's pretty impressive!"
Krack added that the 41-year-old driver's suggestion was timely, given that different teams were seeking different scenarios for the final race restart.
The communications between teams and the FIA can be frantic in such situations, but Krack described his team's methodical approach. He said, "They are in touch all the time, and they try to work together because you cannot go attacking, attacking, attacking on the radio all the time."
Krack described Alonso as a professional who knows "exactly when he has to say what" and is "taken very seriously" by the FIA. He added, "If he has to say something, normally it's right. He talks to them, but he's not constantly menacing or hammering, not at all."
The broadcast of such communications was stopped following the 2021 season. However, Krack's comments give fans an insight into the behind-the-scenes discussions that take place between teams and the FIA.
The Aston Martin team was particularly interested in using the Lap 57 grid order to determine the restart order for the 58th and final lap. Krack said, "Had we not [remembered the Silverstone incident], then he would have reminded us quickly." Alonso was eventually taken out of the top three by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz.
The next Formula 1 race will take place on April 30 at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan. Fans will be eagerly waiting to see whether Alonso's quick thinking and the Aston Martin team's methodical approach will help them secure a win.
