Alpine's Bruno Famin addresses potential 11th Formula 1 team entry
As the 2024 Formula 1 season approaches, the motorsport community anticipates not only thrilling races but also the possibility of future new entrants joining the grid.
Bruno Famin, the new principal of Alpine Racing, recently shared insights regarding the potential addition of an 11th team to the championship.
Famin, who took over the reins as team principal following Otmar Szafnauer's departure last season, emphasized Alpine's openness to welcoming another team into the fold. However, he clarified that the ultimate decision rests with Formula One Management (FOM).
The spotlight recently fell on Andretti Cadillac Racing, an American team eager to enter Formula 1. Despite initial approval from the FIA, the team faced a setback when FOM opted to defer their entry until at least 2028 after a commercial review.
This decision dealt a blow to Andretti's aspirations, which included plans for a potential entry as early as next year or in 2026. The team had garnered support from the FIA but encountered resistance from existing teams during discussions about expanding the grid.
Addressing the situation, Famin underscored Alpine's stance on the matter. "We have always said we would welcome an 11th team if they add value to the championship," he stated. "But FOM is the one who can judge that."
Regarding potential collaboration with Andretti, Famin revealed that while conversations had taken place, no concrete decisions had been reached. "It was an option, but we hadn't decided anything," he explained.
As Formula 1 enthusiasts eagerly await the upcoming season, the discussions surrounding potential new entrants add an extra layer of intrigue to the sport. While Alpine remain open to the idea of expansion, the final call lies in the hands of Formula One Management, shaping the landscape of the championship for years to come.
With pre-season testing set to kick off at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir later this month, teams and fans alike eagerly anticipate the dawn of a new era in Formula 1.
