Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer set to take 'risk' with upgrade package at Austrian Grand Prix
Alpine team principal, Otmar Szafnauer, has revealed that a daring move will be made with their upgrade package at the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix.
Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer has announced that the team will be taking a calculated "risk" with its upgrade package at the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix.
As Formula 1 returns to Europe next weekend, teams are now fully engaged in the development phase, following the completion of the early races.
Since the scathing public criticism from CEO Laurent Rossi, who branded the team "amateurish" due to a sluggish start to the season, Alpine's performance has seen a remarkable improvement. Esteban Ocon secured a podium finish, claiming third place in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Currently placed fifth in the Constructors' standings after eight races, Alpine are determined to maintain their position as the best of the rest, trailing behind Red Bull, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Ferrari.
Szafnauer expressed his eagerness for the team to continue their upgrade path, stating, "We have something in the pipeline, some more coming in Austria at the next race, a new front wing."
Rather than waiting for a comprehensive upgrade package, Szafnauer emphasized the team's strategy of introducing continuous upgrades as they become available. He stated, "So that's what we are doing, and then you'll see even further upgrades in a few more races."
The Austrian Grand Prix poses a unique challenge for teams as it includes the second Sprint event of the season after Azerbaijan.
This reduces the available practice time, with parc ferme conditions enforced after the opening practice session. Despite this, Szafnauer confidently asserted, "We'll take that risk."
Mark your calendars for Sunday, 2 July, as the Austrian Grand Prix awaits at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.
Remaining F1 Sprint dates in 2023:
