Aston Martin boss Mike Krack admits facing 'learning curve' over latest Formula 1 upgrade
Aston Martin have admitted that they have "a lot to learn" about their latest upgrade package following a "confusing" weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Team boss Mike Krack has acknowledged that Aston Martin have "a lot to learn" about their latest Formula 1 upgrade package following a "confusing" weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The Silverstone-based outfit finds itself in a fierce battle with Mercedes and Ferrari for second place in the Constructors' standings, while Red Bull dominates the field.
Aston Martin, under the leadership of owner Lawrence Stroll, has invested significantly in infrastructure and personnel since rebranding from Racing Point. The team recently completed the move into a brand-new factory, demonstrating their commitment to success.
The early returns on their investments have been promising, with Fernando Alonso securing podium finishes in six of the first eight races.
However, the Canadian Grand Prix proved challenging due to technical difficulties and inclement weather. The first practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was abandoned due to CCTV issues, and the second session was affected by rain.
Consequently, the upgrades applied to the AMR23 received just one hour of dry running time to collect data before the competition began.
"When you introduce new components to the car, it always necessitates a period of relearning: 'How does the car behave under different conditions and ride heights?'" explained team principal Krack during a media briefing.
"We have much to discover and must continue developing the car in the upcoming races."
Friday proved to be an exceptionally difficult day for the team. The unpredictable conditions and interruptions led to a state of confusion, with various programs being run at different times.
"We were truly uncertain about our performance. Perhaps Fernando had a better sense than we did," Krack remarked.
The Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg is the next destination on the F1 calendar, scheduled for Sunday, 2 July.
Aston Martin will be aiming to make progress and further refine their performance on this challenging circuit.
