Andrea Stella: McLaren's F1 progress is promising but don't forget about Mercedes
McLaren boss Andrea Stella is optimistic about the team's car development for the 2024 season, while he also suspects Mercedes will bounce back.
McLaren has made a significant impact this season, successfully revamping its MCL60 to climb from the midfield to become a podium contender.
However, even though the team is currently performing exceptionally well, Stella recently remarked that they have not reached even half of their aspirations regarding the aerodynamics of their car.
This suggests that there is considerable room for improvement in 2024, particularly with their new car being the inaugural product exclusively crafted in their state-of-the-art wind tunnel facility in Woking.
While feeling positive about McLaren's progress, Stella also warned that Mercedes won't be stuck in the middle of the pack for long.
"At the moment, we are encouraged by the development we see on next year's car," said Stella.
"But, at the same time, I guess it's the same for everyone because right now some concepts are starting to be quite clear across the paddock.
"We don't know whether we are developing faster than other teams. And above all, we don't know whether we are developing faster than Red Bull.
"And let's not forget that Mercedes, I think they realized what they need to work on. And I suspect they're going to jump back quite strongly.
"There are no factual elements at this stage to say this is the pecking order we'll see next year. I think things can evolve."
