Hereford best bet (2030): Course-distance winner Famoso can deliver again

As the curtain comes down on Hereford’s PlanetSportBet-sponsored evening meeting, this wide-open two-mile chase should give race-goers plenty of food for thought.

With the possible exception of the two rank outsiders, a case could be made for the majority of the seven market leaders, of whom Jet Of Dreams is strongly fancied to build on some recent near misses under the astutely booked Brian Hughes.

Ferrybridge is expected to bounce back from a fifth-placed hurdling outing at Kempton, and this return to larger obstacles is set to suit, especially now reunited with Lilly Pinchin, who was on board for her last chasing effort that had seen the six-year-old win by just shy of 10 lengths at Huntingdon a month earlier.

If those two make the frame as expected, then the most likely candidate to join them is Matt Sheppard’s reliable performer Famoso, who always seems to put in a good shift and is invariably in contention at the business end of his races.

Famoso has not been outside the top five in any of his 13 outings since last August, making the frame nine times, of which three culminated in a parade around the winner’s enclosure.

Suggested best bet: Famoso in the 20:30 at Hereford

The last of those successes was the most impressive of all, a 7½-length romp over this course and distance in January, with his 12 rivals strung out far behind him.

Regular rider Stan Sheppard reunites here, having been absent from the saddle 12 days ago, when Famoso was last seen finishing fifth of 12 (less than five lengths behind the winner) in the Molly Ollys Chase at Warwick.

Always a willing performer, it would be no surprise to see Famoso in the mix again here, despite remaining six pounds above his last winning mark.
