Wolverhampton free racing tips: All-weather specialist can challenge vulnerable favourite

Wolverhampton racecourse

There’s a decent all-weather card to enjoy at Wolverhampton and this competitive finale should give race-goers plenty to talk about as they wind their way home on Monday night.

20:30 Wolverhampton: Get Raceday Ready Handicap (1 mile 142 yards)

At the head of the early market, Newfangled looks vulnerable with a 5lb rise on the back of his 10-furlong  win at Lingfield earlier this month , and a far better-value option at the price is King Of Speed, whose figures since being upped to a mile are 1222244 (and 1222 on the all-weather).

Having been campaigned exclusively over trips between five and seven furlongs for most of his career, he was upped to a mile for the first time when he contested a handicap over this course and distance in February this year.

Off a mark of 56, he beat six rivals rated up to 62 under today’s rider, Billy Loughnane, scoring despite coming out of the widest draw of all and having to squeeze through a narrow gap to hit the front in the closing stages.

He was back over this very trip again two runs later, in March, when he went down by a nose, finishing runner-up of eight and beaten only by the progressive Egoiste with the pair well clear of the rest.

King Of Speed was unfortunate to again bump into Egoiste back over this course and distance at the end of March and once again that rival was the only one able to beat him as he finished  second of 11 in what was a 0-60 handicap which he contested off 59 (2lbs higher than today).

This will be his first visit since, and it comes on the back of a solid enough return from a break on the turf at Salisbury at the end of last month, when he was ridden by a very inexperienced amateur.

With Billy Loughnane (who rode him in all three of his course-distance runs) back in the saddle today, and likely to come on again for that recent return to action, King Of Speed has a good chance to enhance his impressive record.

Of the others, Cariad also has a very good record around here, recording figures of 1213 from her four visits, which includes an unbeaten record over this trip.

She arrives on the back of two very solid one-mile runs at Chelmsford and Southwell since returning from a short break last month.

Beaten only by a pair now rated 70 and 68 on her latest run at Southwell, she is a major player off an unchanged mark against 0-60 opposition back over her this course and distance.
