Southwell free racing tip: Asimov primed to strike in competitive handicap sprint

Southwell racecourse

There’s a decent all-weather card for Southwell race-goers to enjoy on Thursday night, and this six-furlong sprint promises to be a highly entertaining contest.

It’s no surprise to see top-weighted Justcallmepete vying for the favourite tag after his hard-fought win at Newbury two outings ago, not to mention four course-distance successes a couple of seasons ago.

However, our final nod of approval goes in the direction of Asimov, the gelded son of Pivotal and Interstellar, who has been right in the mix in most of his 11 career efforts so far, winning two of them.

Those two successes both came over this distance within his last five appearances since June, firstly in a 12-runner maiden at Doncaster, and more recently in a 13-runner handicap on Newcastle’s testing uphill all-weather track.

In between, he ran equally well to finish a close-up second behind the short-priced favourite on Nottingham’s turf, while his never-nearer fifth of 11 at Kempton last time out a fortnight ago was a better performance than the bare figures might suggest, after being caught further back than ideal.

It is hoped first-time visor will prove effective in a race expected, and with Daniel Muscutt back in the saddle, this James Fanshawe-trained three-year-old might just be poised to strike in this Class 4 handicap.

Suggested Bet: Asimov each-way in the 20:00 at Southwell
