Chelmsford free racing tip: High hopes for all-weather specialist off favourable mark

Chelmsford racecourse

There might only be a small field contesting the last race on Chelmsford’s evening card, but there’s enough quality on show to suggest that the six starters will give race-goers a competitive finale.

20:30 Chelmsford: Illuminate Christmas Ball Handicap (7 furlongs)

It would appear that the BF Brookhouse-trained Profitman is likely to be sent off as favourite, having won over this course and distance in April, and come with a neck and half a length of repeating that feat here in his last two outings over the last month.

Last-time-out winner Batal Dandy is expected to mount a concerted challenge, but our nod goes to the only other course-distance winner in the field, Cogsworth, who was last seen at Kempton 10 days ago.

After being cramped for room coming into the straight, Chris Dwyer’s three-year-old made catching headway from the rear of the field to post a good speed figure and finish a very promising never-nearer third of 11 runners.

He arrives here to tackle what appears to be a more straightforward assignment in this Class 6 handicap that makes this proven performer a leading player here.

Cogsworth’s current mark of 61 looks very manageable, and is back close to the weight under which he won at Brighton in May, less than three weeks after his course-distance victory here.

Indeed, the three-pound claim of jockey Christian Howarth brings him right down to that winning mark, which can only help his realistic claims in a race of this nature

Suggested Bet: Cogsworth each-way in the 20:30 at Chelmsford
