Jon Rahm leaps to Sergio Garcia's defence after Ryder Cup snub

Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia

Jon Rahm is going to miss Spanish compatriot Sergio Garcia at the upcoming Ryder Cup.

John Rahm is annoyed that politics has effectively prevented Sergio Garcia from competing in the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Brothers in Arms are now brothers apart as world golf bodies continue their spat. Garcia - the Ryder Cup's record points scorer - was fined and suspended from the DP World Tour for joining LIV Golf. After an independent arbitrator upheld the Tour's decision, Garcia gave up his membership altogether.
Driving the final nail in Garcia's coffin was Team Europe's Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who revealed last week that the veteran "had no chance" of being selected.

Speaking to Golf Monthly, a dejected Rahm made no bones about the current situation between LIV Golf and the more established tours.

"I'm going to miss him... we had a great partnership at Whistling Straits," said the Spaniard of Garcia, who has been a part of the event for 24 years.

"I'm going to mention history again one more time. A Spanish duo in the Ryder Cup I think to me is embedded into the roots of the Ryder Cup. Look with Seve [Ballesteros] and Ollie [José María Olazábal] were able to do throughout their partnership, right. So it's a little sad to me that politics have gotten in the way of such a beautiful event.

"It's the best Europeans against the best American, period. And whatever is going on, who is playing LIV and who is not playing LIV to me shouldn't matter.

"It's whoever is best suited to represent the European side. And I have a hard time to believe that the best player Europe has ever had, the most successful player Europe has had on the Ryder Cup isn't fit to be on the team."

The 44th Ryder Cup gets underway on 29 September at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Italy.
