The Memorial Tournament tips: Scottie Scheffler can raise putting game to win at Muirfield Village

The USPGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village Golf Club (Jack’s Place), where golf expert Martin Colwell thinks Scottie Scheffler can solve his putting issues to win the Memorial Tournament.

Jack Nicklaus purchased this piece of prime real estate aged just 26 and built a classical masterpiece as his homage to Augusta and the Masters. The name Muirfield comes from where Jack won the Open Championship in 1966 to complete his Major Grand Slam.

A par 72 and a testing 7,571 yards in length, the course comprises tree lined fairways, tough strategic bunkering, water hazards on eleven holes and tough thick rough that is a mixture of three grasses. The course has a tough finishing stretch of five holes, with the eighteenth being considered to be one of the hardest on the Tour. 

Billy Horschel is the defending champion, but the unsurprising favourite is Scottie Scheffler at 13/2, who is in great form at present, with only the putter stopping him from winning tournaments.

Scottie fell just short in last week's Charles Schwab Challenge, finishing just one stroke behind Emiliano Grillo and Adam Schenk, and if Scheffler can just warm up his flatstick then he will be close to unstoppable, given the great shape of the rest of his game.

Jon Rahm is only just behind Scheffler in the betting. When on his top game he would be a favourite to win this week (and every week), but he has been a little inconsistent in recent times, although he remains a big danger to all.
This is Patrick Cantlay's best course performance wise, having won this tournament in both 2019 and 2021. His 10/1 seems a little stingy and is perhaps based more on his previous performances here than his current form, which has been decent but not stellar. However, you can't argue with his course record and it would be unwise to dismiss his chances.

Rory McIlroy is 12/1 on a course where his previous form is not great, and the fact that the Northern Irishman has been struggling to find his best game in recent times makes it difficult to favour him over the top three in the betting.
Next in the market is Xander Schauffele at around 14/1. Xander is playing well but fails to win these days, and although highly rated by golf pundits, he doesn't hold much appeal based upon his recent inability to convert a solid game into trophies.

Viktor Hovland has been contending strongly in recent weeks but bad errors in the final rounds have continued to scupper his chances. Can he cut those errors out to win here? He's currently around 20/1 if you think that he can. 

We then jump to 22/1 where we find Collin Morikawa, who won on this course in 2021 in the Workday Open during Covid. However, the course was very wet then and set up much easier than it will be this week, and until Morikawa's putting woes go away, he will not be winning.

Others to consider:

Sam Burns appears to be coming back to form,and looks appealing at 33/1, while I particularly like the look of Tom (JooHyung) Kim this week at 45/1 and he looks well worth an each-way punt.

Finally, Adam Schenk was in great form last week and was unlucky to be beaten in a play-off last Sunday is 200/1 at present.
