Jannik Sinner makes for very early appeal in Wimbledon Championships ante-post market

Jannik Sinner Rotterdam - Feb 2023

Planet Sport tennis tipster Derek Bilton is already fed up with the winter and is looking ahead to next year's Wimbledon Championships already to find some big ante-post value.

Arthur Fils, you broke my heart.

I had a decent bet on the young Frenchman to win the Next Gen ATP Finals last week and he looked for all the world the winner… until he wasn’t.

Fair play to Hamad Medjedovic however. The 20-year-old capped a brilliant breakthrough season by lifting the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM trophy on Sunday in Jeddah, winning the first five-set final in the tournament’s short history.

Medjedovic looks a real talent. And crucially like his hero Novak Djokovic - he may have the temperament to match his talent.

He plays ultra-aggressive, fast and loose tennis and hit 69 aces in the tournament, which is a new record.

Medjedovic should take loads of confidence from his week in Jeddah and could be set for a big year in 2024.

Talking of next year, with not much happening in the world of tennis as 2023 meanders to an inglorious sporting end, now isn’t a bad time to look at some of the markets for the 2024 Majors.

With the recent snow and ice weather warnings, strawberries and cream and Wimbledon in July seems an awfully long way off.

However it will sharp come around and there may be some value for those willing to get stuck into the ante-post markets now.

Djokovic is a 7/4 shout with Planet Sport Bet to win an eighth title at SW19.

Such a skinny price is no surprise given he finished this year like a train. Indeed it’s a slight surprise that he is not the favourite, with reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz a 6/4 poke with the same firm.

Despite his tender years, Alcaraz has an almost complete game.

He moves brilliantly, has more variety on the forehand than most of his peers, better drop shots, and is uber skilful with the slice.

So it’s a bit of a head-scratcher how he didn’t win a single tournament after that sensational Wimbledon success, isn’t it?

In any sport, it can be difficult when the hunter becomes the hunted and I have no doubt that Alacaraz will have a huge 2024.

However when you consider the fact that Jannik Sinner is a whopping 14/1 for Wimbledon as things stand, of those young guns he looks a far more enticing price.

OK the Italian has yet to contest a Grand Slam final, but it’s hard to forget his stunning end to the year - which saw him beat Djokovic twice, once at the ATP Finals and once en route to Davis Cup glory with Italy.

Alcaraz was brilliant for the first half of the season (let’s not forget cramp stopped him dead in his tracks during that intriguing French Open semi against Djokovic just when he was starting to cook).

However as ‘Carlitos’ form fell away after Wimbledon, Sinner came into his own during the final few months of the season as he bagged three of his four titles from August onwards.

Sinner possesses extraordinary speed and power off both wings, and as well as those recent wins over Novak it is also worth remembering that Sinner has a winning record against Alcaraz, including victories at the Miami Open and China Open this year.

In short, given his talent, the bookies have no business making him a 14/1 rag for Wimbledon.

In the words of the Bard ‘It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves’.

Tip: Jannik Sinner to win Wimbledon at 14/1 (Planet Sport Bet)
